In the lead-up to #COP30, the ME Council, in partnership with the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, and QatarDebate Center, convened the second edition of the UTalk event to support elevating the narrative around climate action in the Gulf. In “MENA Food Subsidies Are Here to Stay — For Now” by Oumeyma Chelbi for the Middle East Council on Global Affairs مجلس الشرق الأوسط للشؤون الدولية, Arab Barometer 2024 data show widespread public backing for subsidies amid rising food insecurity. 🍞 ➡️ 62% in 🇯🇴 #Jordan, 54% in 🇱🇧 #Lebanon, and 39% in 🇹🇳 #Tunisia see subsidies as top spending priorities. ➡️ 32% in 🇹🇳 Tunisia, 27% in 🇯🇴 Jordan and 🇮🇶 #Iraq report often running out of food and not being able to afford more. ➡️ Trust in government is low — 39% in 🇯🇴 Jordan, 36% in 🇹🇳 Tunisia, 33% in 🇲🇦 Morocco, and just 7% in 🇱🇧 Lebanon express trust. The Middle East Council on Global Affairs مجلس الشرق الأوسط للشؤون الدولية hosted the second annual convening of the Doha Global South Health Policy Initiative, in partnership with the Gates Foundation. This initiative is dedicated to harnessing collaborative platforms across the Global South, bringing together senior health officials, policymakers, and experts to address shared challenges and co-develop solutions. Over the past two years, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs and the Gates Foundation, with the support of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, have played a key role in advancing South-South health cooperation by strengthening local networks that foster sustainable, inclusive, and resilient healthcare systems.

💧 Water Diplomacy in the MENA Region: Advancing Science and Peacebuilding Collaboration The Middle East Council on Global Affairs مجلس الشرق الأوسط للشؤون الدولية, in partnership with the Geneva Water Hub, a Centre of Competence on Water for Peace and Blue Peace Middle East, and with support from the Embassy of Switzerland in Qatar🇨🇭, convened a two-day high-level roundtable in Doha on Water Diplomacy in the MENA region. Moderated by Natasha Carmi, Senior Water and Peace Programme Manager, and with an intervention by Dr. Caroline Pellaton, Operations Director, Dr. Jasmine Moussa, Legal Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt , and Dr. Chadi Abdallah, Director, National Center for Natural Hazards & Early Warning - NCNE, Lebanon, the discussions explored how water can become a catalyst for stability, from hydropolitical mapping to the protection of water during armed conflicts and the use of international legal mechanisms 🌍. Participants explored how water can become a catalyst for stability through discussions on hydropolitical mapping, protection of water during armed conflicts, and the use of international legal mechanisms 🌍. The Hub’s Water for Peace Approach was highlighted as a model for equitable and inclusive governance, anchored in robust legal and policy frameworks. Building on this roundtable, the Doha mission (26–30 September 2025) marked a broader effort by the Geneva Water Hub to strengthen partnerships and advance the use of water for peace across the MENA region 🤝. It opened new avenues for collaboration with Qatari and regional institutions, including the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, the Qatari Diplomatic Institute, and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا, paving the way for joint initiatives on capacity building, dialogue facilitation, and research on water resilience 💡.
