How much could cities in sub-Saharan #Africa save by investing in nature? Our experts shared the numbers. 👇 Last weekend, at the #IUCNCongress in #AbuDhabi, IISD and @ParksCanada co-hosted the session “From Cities to Parks: Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience.” The discussion explored key lessons from implementing #NatureBasedSolutions through IISD’s #SUNCASA and #CAPA initiatives across sub-Saharan #Africa and the Caribbean. Michael Kapetanakis, IISD’s Sustainable Infrastructure Specialist, shared preliminary findings from #SUNCASA’s integrated cost-benefit analysis, highlighting how NbS can deliver substantial economic returns by 2050: ➡️ USD 2.2 million in savings from managing invasive species in #Johannesburg, #SouthAfrica ➡️ USD 1.35 million saved in flood damage repairs in #DireDawa, #Ethiopia ➡️ USD 5.5 million saved in climate-related health costs in #Kigali, #Rwanda Participants also underscored the importance of robust data and effective communication to demonstrate the tangible benefits of NbS and inspire policy-makers and investors to scale up action. The full economic analysis reports for SUNCASA’s three cities will be released in November.
