Beyond speed improvements, 5G is expected to unleash a massive IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystem where mobile networks can fulfill the communication needs for billions of connected devices with the right trade-offs between speed, latency, and cost. 5G promises to be a game-changer for how we live our lives – while also challenging how business will be conducted in just about every industry.
    Drones have seen incredible growth in adoption thanks to decreasing prices, improved user-friendliness, and the flourishing of techniques to interpreting the data captured (e.g., Structure from Motion - SfM). Well established industries, such as surveying, mapping, and inspection, have been disrupted by the introduction of drones. They have quickly adopted the technology as a means to reduce operational costs and turn-around time. However, as the quantity and quality of captured data has increased and flight times are being extended, challenges in data transfer and long-distance control have started to become an area of significant research.
    The two technologies coupled will enable new markets and opportunities where decentralized extensive data collection by multiple sensors will be sent to a centralized processing back-office. This synergy will allow the high levels of coordination required for delivery systems spanning entire cities can leverage some of the technological advances offered by 5G. These two are often seen as two building blocks for “Smart Cities”: a city that incorporates information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of public services such as energy, transportation, and utilities to reduce resource consumption, wastage and overall costs.
