Welcome

Aquatic ecosystems take many forms, from the vast, shadowy depths of the ocean to the trickling streams of mountain rivers; from icy Arctic meadows to small, vibrant puddles in tropical rainforests. In each of these ecosystems, microbes abound, in large numbers, interacting in diverse ways and structuring microbiomes that play critical roles in shaping the structure and function of these ecosystems.

Microbial ecologists strive to uncover the complex roles that these microbial communities have in ecosystem dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, host interactions, and planetary health. Current advances in fields such as omics, imaging, microfludidics or ecological theory, are driving a rapidly evolving science that has stablished at the forefront of larger disciplines, such as microbiology, limnology or oceanography. And this is happening at a time of fast pacing global change, which is likely to impact the diversity, composition, ecological function and evolution of aquatic communities in ways we can’t fully predict. The challenges ahead are immense.

In this iteration of the long-standing and successful Symposium on Aquatic Microbial Ecology (SAME) series, this year’s symposium will focus on the latest research on aquatic microbiomes, their links to ecosystem functions, and the impacts of global change. The meeting will bring together leading scientists and early-career researchers from around the globe to discuss new findings, concepts, and techniques that help us understand microbiome structure and function, as well as their responses to stressors such as temperature increases and pollutants.

By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting innovative research, the meeting will advance our understanding of the resilience and vulnerability of aquatic microbiomes, while exploring potential strategies to mitigate the impacts of change. This event will provide an important forum for sharing cutting-edge theoretical and methodological advancements, encouraging in-person exchange of ideas and tools that will foster unique collaborations between marine and freshwater research communities. Ultimately, it will contribute to a broader understanding of planetary biology.

We’d love for you to join us at the SAME18 meeting in the lively and beautiful city of Barcelona, right by the Mediterranean Sea. It’s going to be a fantastic time, full of great science and even better conversations!

The SAME18 organizing committee.

The conference will be held at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park in Barcelona.

The PRBB stands out for its beauty and location by the sea, combining aesthetics and scientific inspiration. Designed by architects Manel Brullet and Albert de Pineda, its flexible structure encourages interaction between researchers. Despite its technological complexity, it maintains a line of austerity with materials such as wood, steel, concrete and glass. At 55,000 m², it is one of the largest buildings in Barcelona, occupying an area equivalent to one block of the Eixample. Its surroundings include iconic buildings such as the Mapfre Towers and Hotel Arts, the Gas Natural building and Frank Gehry’s fish.
