Boliden

Only a few days left until the world’s deepest marathon. This Saturday, on October 25, 60 participants will run 42 kilometers, 1,120 meters underground in the Garpenberg mine. Organized by Boliden together with ICMM and BecomingX, the event aims to raise 1 million USD for charity.   Watch the video and learn more about this unique challenge.

In Finland, the mining industry has just released its estimates on total consequences if the proposed quadrupled tax increase is realized. And it is serious. Thousands of Finnish jobs are threatened, investments in the industry will drastically be reduced and perhaps most important, the remaining life of existing mines will on average be reduced by four years. In short, less jobs in Finland and less metals for the climate transition in Europe. In Kevitsa; nickel, copper, cobalt, palladium and platinum are produced. All of them have been assessed to be of critical or strategic importance to the EU. Let´s think this through more thoroughly before deciding the way forward. We were proud to welcome ICMM and global industry experts to the Rävliden deposit last week, as part of the Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles (ICSV) Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction (GHG) session.  Rävliden is home to the world’s longest underground battery trolley system, a groundbreaking solution that has increased productivity while reducing emissions thanks to renewable electricity. This technology allows dynamic charging in motion, helping us move closer to our goal of operating fossil-free. Let Aitik light up the autumn darkness! October 27 marks the beginning of a new era in Swedish television history. That's when the workplace reality series Gruvan (The Mine) premieres on TV3 and Viaplay. The series is a collaboration between Boliden and LKAB and aims primarily to showcase Aitik as a workplace in Boliden's case. Viewers will be able to follow our ordinary operations in Aitik, where the focus is on solving challenges that can arise in everything from the rope shovel to the concentrator.

We recognize that our activities affect various stakeholders and ecosystems. Therefore, reclamation and restoration are not just a policy but a core practice of our operations. Our responsibility extends beyond our active operations, and we are continually learning how to best manage the legacy of our closed sites. The recent remediation of Rävlidmyrgruvan, completed together with Skanska, is one example of how we strive to balance industrial activity with environmental care. Through innovative solutions—like dredging contaminated sediments and applying a moraine sealing layer—we’ve reduced environmental risks and created the conditions for a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem. Nearly 100,000 cubic meters of mining waste were safely contained, and the area is now being continuously monitored to ensure long-term value for both nature and local communities. Our work doesn’t stop when mining ends. By restoring and managing closed mines, we’re making these areas accessible and valuable for future generations, supporting biodiversity and traditional livelihoods such as reindeer herding.
