The Nordic space market truly has the wind in its sails — or perhaps more fittingly, fuel in its rockets 🚀 Benita Gornicka was recently promoted to Director of Space Missions and Applications Europe, at Unibap. Few others possess a deeper understanding of the current strategic developments in the Nordic space domain. As proof of this vibrant development, she recently spent a week meeting with innovative Norwegian space companies, attending the Nordic Space Summit 2025, and participating in the Winter Satellite Workshop in Finland. 🎤 What are your reflections on the Nordic Space Summit 2025? As Queen Margrethe II once said in her speech on September 7, 1991: 'We are living here in the North under one big sky: the bright summer nights that come to us, the long winter nights that bring us closer together, to look inside ourselves and to be together.' Today, it is not only one sky that unites the people of the Nordics, but also one shared space strategy. These are my main takeaways and trends from the event: 🔹Nordic space actors show a strong and growing interest in cross-border collaboration, supported by deep cultural understanding and aligned strategic goals. 🔹Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership has further strengthened regional coordination, especially around shared security concerns in the Arctic and Baltic Sea. 🔹Heightened geopolitical tensions — including Russia’s aggression and reduced reliance on U.S. security guarantees — have created a “new normal” that drives closer Nordic cooperation. 🔹The region boasts advanced capabilities across the entire space value chain, with strong links between civil space applications and defence innovation. 🔹Well-established defence industries across the Nordics are enabling the development of dual-use technologies and reinforcing Europe’s shift toward a more security-oriented space sector. 🎤 What role do you see for the Nordic countries in the European space community? The Nordic countries are becoming even more important players in Europe’s space community, exemplified by the Bifrost project, a Danish-Swedish AI surveillance mission in the Arctic, and other ongoing initiatives. 🎤 How can the Nordics strengthen their position in a changing space market? The Nordic countries should strengthen cooperation at the MoD level to drive space projects and capitalize on opportunities such as the EDF. Companies are already prepared for the next step. 🎤 How do Unibap Space Solutions' offerings align with this? Unibap’s contributions and offerings are fully aligned with these developments. The future of AI in space is network intelligence 🚀 At the end of last year, FDL / Earth Systems Lab, Trillium and Oxford University Researcher Vít Růžička shared some of our ML onboard capabilities at the first TED conference on AI (TEDAI Vienna) as well as some game-changing results from his PhD. Vít’s TED Talk is now live and we’re super proud to have these results being showcased on the world stage - congratulations Vít 🌟 We call these capabilities, NIO.space. NIO.space is a platform for multi-instrument observation from orbit. Over the past 24 months it has achieved numerous world (and space!) firsts, including the first deep neural network trained in space, the first segmentation from orbit, the first migration of ML between instruments, the first federated learning between orbit and ground and first unsupervised change detection (as far as we know!) One of the AIs that Vít shares is STARCOP, a machine learning tool that automatically detects methane plumes from orbit leveraging multispectral and hyperspectral data to create a multi-instrument observation capability.This research is now being implemented at the UN Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). Vít and the STARCOP team proved it was possible to identify excessive ‘super emitters’ from hyperspectral satellites using ML, supporting action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieve net-zero targets by allowing satellites to work together in concert, paving the way for a revolution in the way ML is used to extract insight from hyperspectral instruments. The findings have been recognised as one of Nature’s Journal Top 100 papers of 2023 https://lnkd.in/eXUxSHPk.
