We loved welcoming Laura Anderson to our Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm to chat to our Environment and Sustainability team about all things nature and wildlife 🐬 Aberdeen Bay is home to a rich variety of marine and bird life, including harbour porpoises, seals, kittiwakes, and gannets. Vattenfall works closely with marine ecologists and ornithologists to monitor and protect these species, and the wind farm’s location and design were selected to minimise disruption to natural habitats. We’ve built floating islands to support biodiversity around our hydropower plants. In a natural river, lakes are connected by rapids and water levels change slowly. Plants and animals have adapted to this. In developed rivers, rapids are replaced by hydropower plants and water levels can change quickly and significantly. Floating islands help flora and fauna adjust by providing a stable habitat which can serve as nesting platforms for birds above the surface, as well as a favorable environment for zooplankton, fish and periphyton algae below the surface. At our hybrid parks, solar panels and battery systems share the same infrastructure – one grid connection, one transformer, one substation. That means less land, lower costs, and more efficient use of the grid. The battery can store excess electricity when solar generation is high and feeds it back when demand peaks. This helps avoid wasting electricity and makes better use of what’s already produced. At Symbizon, we’re combining crop farming and solar generation on the same land. Our first agricultural photovoltaics park (agri-PV) in the Netherlands has many smart features that enable this multi-use. Unlike standard solar parks, the panels here are spaced further apart, mounted higher, and rotate with the sun – letting farmers continue to grow oats, potatoes, beans and more between the rows. It’s a new way of thinking about land, and a first step towards larger-scale sites where food and electricity can be produced side by side. At our new solar farm near Juliusburg in northern Germany, we will combine fossil free electricity production with biodiversity support. Working with wildlife biologist Daniel Hoffmann, we’re creating new habitats and using tools like eDNA soil analysis, AI audio for birds and thermal cameras for mammals. Rode bieten telen in een zonnepark? Natuurlijk! 🌱☀️ De bietentijd is weer aangebroken, en deze week reed voor het eerst een rooimachine tussen de zonnepanelen van Symbizon. Dit innovatieve project combineert zonnepanelen met strokenteelt op één perceel. De panelen staan verder uit elkaar, waardoor er ruimte ontstaat om gewassen te verbouwen tussen de rijen. Symbizon werd in 2024 geopend en levert sindsdien stroom. Daarna namen Hemus en ERF BV het landbouwdeel op zich. Dit jaar zijn er bonen en bieten gezaaid tussen de panelen. Het combineren van functies – zon én akkerbouw – biedt veel voordelen. En dat gebeurt niet alleen op land: op zee telen we zeewier tussen de windturbines van een van onze Deense windparken. Acteur Samuel L. Jackson prijst dat initiatief momenteel aan in onze commercials, op geheel eigen wijze. De bietenoogst krijgt helaas geen eigen campagne, maar in de geest van onze commercial zeggen we hier toch: motherf@cking solar farms!
