“I met Rabih at an external business conference where we both represented Microsoft and Microsoft's aspirational culture. As part of PGLE's mission, we work to operationalize these standards and facilitate a global, multi-stakeholder effort to enhance social and economic inclusion for diverse populations. PGLE operates in collaboration with BSR, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the World Economic Forum.

In today’s world, competitors of cash as a payment method are growing in number
and usage. With the demand for cash decreasing, central banks will lose their position as the
monopolistic supplier of money in the market. Electronic currencies such as bank deposits
and e-money will take over, owing to their added benefit to the economy, while base
money (central bank money) will eventually cease to exist. Changes will be needed to model
the new economy and conduct a monetary…In today’s world, competitors of cash as a payment method are growing in number

and e-money will take over, owing to their added benefit to the economy, while base
money (central bank money) will eventually cease to exist. Changes will be needed to model
the new economy and conduct a monetary policy that functions without regard to money
supply. This concept is aligned with the models of New Keynesian and New Classical
economists, in addition to Wicksell and Woodford, the latter having built a modern
monetary rule based on interest rates. Nevertheless, the implications of a cashless economy
are larger than that. The central bank’s position as a lender of last resort and an enforcer of
monetary policy will no longer remain the same. Dependence on its money will diminish,
and it will no longer be able set the interest rate in the market and perform sizeable open
market operations. Another consequence is issues with price levels in the market as private
banks start backing their supplied money in an unregulated fashion. The solution to this is
implementing tight regulations and laws for private banks or resorting to a supervised
system that has no monetary policy, which could mean the upcoming demise of central
banks.
