For companies seeking to identify, assess, and address how their digital products and services are impacting child rights, explore the newly released Digital Child Rights Impact Assessment Toolkit, developed in partnership with UNICEF. ⤵️ #sustainablebusiness #digitalservices #tech

🚨 Big resource drop! 🚨 We’re excited to announce the release of the Digital Child Rights Impact Assessment (D-CRIA) Toolbox. Our team at BSR partnered with UNICEF to develop the D-CRIA Toolbox — a series of resources that equips companies to identify, assess, and address how their digital products, services, and operations impact #childrights, in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and OECD guidelines. The digital age has brought tremendous benefits to society, including for children. However, the spread of digital technologies also comes with a broad spectrum of risks to which children are particularly vulnerable. To address these risks, companies developing or deploying digital technologies have a responsibility to conduct due diligence to identify and address the adverse child rights impacts with which they are involved.  The D-CRIA Toolbox was developed to support companies in meeting this responsibility by providing practical, expert-informed tools and guidance tailored to the digital environment. ⭐ D-CRIA Toolbox highlights ⭐ ✔️ Step-by-step guidance on child rights impact assessment ✔️ Guidance on stakeholder engagement with children ✔️ Real-world insights from industry consultations ✔️ Built for tech developers, policy teams, and all child rights champions 📥 Explore the Toolbox: http://bit.ly/4dwThrM 💬 Join the Conversation! We’ll be hosting a webinar walk-through of the D-CRIA process and Q&A. Register here: Tuesday, July 29th (6:30 PT | 9:30 ET | 15:30 CET) - https://bit.ly/3YTFwxo Tuesday, July 29th (16:00 PT | 7:00 SG | 8:00 Tokyo) - https://bit.ly/4jjuo45 And join us at #trustcon in San Francisco for an in-person workshop on D-CRIA in July (From Risk to Resilience: Mastering Child Rights Impact Assessments) We hope these resources help companies consider the full range of children’s rights and meaningfully incorporate them into the design, development, and use of technology. We believe they will be particularly useful for companies conducting risk assessments to meet regulatory requirements, including the DSA systemic risk assessment and the child rights impact assessment under the UK Online Safety Act. Please feel free to reach out with questions or feedback. Kudos to the team members who worked so hard to develop this Josianne Galea Baron Orissa Rose Ife Ogunleye Maria Robold and thank you again to all of the companies, organizations, and experts who contributed! #ChildRights #ResponsibleTech #UNICEF #BSR #DCRIA #HumanRights #bizhumanrights

In a time of continuous shocks and uncertainty, storytelling and positive narratives can inspire empowering actions of change. And it was in a sold-out tent at the Hay Festival at Hay-on-Wye, that BSR's Margot Brent, Charlene Collison, and Christine Diamente engaged writers, thoughts leaders, young adults and children alike to be sustainability changemakers for an hour by ‘Flipping the script’ and co-creating new narratives for a re-imagined future. Our audience jumped straight to the task to write a three-part narrative based on shock cards and hopeful signals of change, spanning technology, climate and nature, society, and the economy. They shared:   💡 The global shocks that we are living today, can disrupt old ways of doing things with fear at first. However, with 1-2 positive signals of change, there is a turning point, and breakthroughs can lead to new ways of doing things, transforming individuals, communities, countries, institutions and entire economies. 🌱 Many participants acknowledged feeling overwhelmed at the cascade of crisis. They were fearful of climate change impacts, the decline of democracy, and technology such as AI. However, working with positive signals (from the adoption of universal basic income to tech-enabled direct democracy) opened pathways to collaboration, community-led nature-based solutions, greener technological practices, greater equity, and improvements to quality of life that wouldn't otherwise be possible. 💪 We did not set out to write fairytales! Persistent challenges like climate change were acknowledged, while the power of community collaboration, human values, improved way of life, changed work structures, valued professions and generating wealth for the greater good became the true heroes of the story.    Our session ended with the audience acknowledging that by "flipping the script," they could be the protagonists of sustainable change through positive narratives at a time of shocks and enduring transformations. A warm thank you to Andy Fryers for inviting us to the Hay Festival and to BSR's Jacob Park for being the inspirational force behind this remarkable moment. See you all next year! #sustainablebusiness #sustainablefuture #naturebasedsolutions #responsibletech #livingwage

This is post 7 in a series on BSR's recent responsible AI work (find it here: https://lnkd.in/gbq5Pi28). It highlights the 5th of eight practitioner guides on integrating human rights into responsible AI: ⭐𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩⭐ ❓𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗦❓ The guide shares best practices for stakeholder engagement in AI product development and deployment. It explores key challenges and provides examples of engagement across the genAI value chain. 🔎𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗜𝗧'𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚🔎 There’s growing focus within the responsible AI field on “participatory approaches”—essentially stakeholder engagement by another name. But this isn’t new. Engaging affected stakeholders is a core part of companies’ responsibility to respect human rights, and it's been happening in the business and human rights field for a long time. Practitioners should learn from this experience! The guide also draws heavily on excellent in-depth resources, including this one from our friends at European Center for Not-for-Profit Law Stichting (https://lnkd.in/gqhiisxf). 👁️𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦👁️  • 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, such as gathering insights to improve products, building reputation and brand image, identifying issues before they become full-blown crises, and meeting regulatory requirements (e.g. the DSA).  • 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗜. E.g. the volume of potentially relevant stakeholders, scalability issues, the gap between technical expertise and lived experience, and navigating NDAs.  • 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀, from ongoing org-level efforts to prioritized product-level engagement based on risk.  • 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Engagement is a specialized skill requiring trained, resourced staff. This is a common failure point for companies.  • 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗺𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁. These relationships are often the most impactful.  • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁. It doesn’t always have to be monetary, but compensating stakeholders for their time and expertise helps avoid extractiveness. Hannah Darnton JY Hoh Samone Nigam
