IPUR is a research and outreach institute which seeks to help the public better understand risk issues in Asia.
About us
The Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) at the National University of Singapore was launched in 2017. Established through funding from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and the National University of Singapore, IPUR is the first international research and public outreach institution of its kind in Asia. IPUR seeks to narrow the gap between people’s perceptions and real world risks by undertaking research on the scientific understanding of risk and its practical application through a multi-disciplinary approach. Bringing together science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities, our current research efforts span across three areas: Data and Technology, Environment and Climate, as well as Health and Food Safety. Through outreach activities, IPUR will also enhance public dialogue on risk issues in Asia and internationally. Combined with its research and educational efforts, IPUR aspires to be a world-leading node of excellence to pave the way for policymakers, regulators, business leaders, scientists, and the general public to collectively make better decisions for the betterment of society. Happy Children's Day! Today, we celebrate the joy, strength and resilience of every child — including the child we once were. At #NUSBISI, together with LRF Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk, we are exploring how being labelled as "obese" in childhood by health professionals, teachers or parents continues to shape the physical and mental health into young adulthood. We invite you to reflect with us on this Children's Day: 🗣️ What was your experience with body image or health as a child? 💬 How has it shaped the person you are today? We are currently looking for young adults aged 21 to 29 who were told they were obese while growing up, especially those from non-Chinese ethnic backgrounds, to take part in our study. Your story can help create a deeper understanding in how early patterns formed in childhood can continue to influence behaviour, wellbeing and self-perception of others. 🔗 Click here to register: https://lnkd.in/gCa-EsmT Eligible participants will be contacted. ℹ️ If you are not eligible, we would be grateful if you could share this with someone who would be. Together, let's build a safe environment to talk, share and learn — because understanding our past is a powerful step towards shaping healthier futures. #NUS #NUSMedicine #ResearchStudy #ResearchVolunteers #ChildhoodObesity #PhysicalHealth #MentalHealth

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the Climate Risk Workshop on 17 September. Special thanks to Amy Sim Kok Eng and Paritta W. for sharing your #journalism experiences and practices to open up discussions on how reporting in today's day and age can be actionable and cut through the "noise". To drive change, climate risk reporting needs to be grounded in people’s realities. Olivia Jensen, Amy and Paritta left participants with some key messages: ☘️ Make it local. Talk about how climate change has intensified extreme weather events and move beyond generic reporting to show how local areas are also impacted. ☘️ Make it actionable. Pair reporting with science and research where possible to offer clear, feasible steps for people and even municipalities, businesses, and communities. ☘️ Lean on #solution and impact-oriented reporting. Angling stories in such a way not only alleviates the sense of helplessness many can feel when scrolling through daily news, it can also open opportunities for journalists to report on how different groups experience climate change differently such as minority groups, pregnant women or those living in poverty. Devastating floods in Eastern Spain showed that information gaps cost lives. This piece distills eight practices for useful, actionable flood #risk communications, from meeting people on the channels they already trust, to naming who’s at risk and what to do, to managing uncertainty and following up post-event. A must-read for anyone shaping alerts, media coverage, or community guidance. Risk know-how #Resilience #DisasterRiskReduction #CrisisComms #DANA
Take a look at our 'Eight practical lessons for communicating flood risk effectively' below and read the full resource on our website here http://bit.ly/4mo1P7b This guidance is based on insights from the devastating floods in Eastern Spain (October 2024), which caused significant loss of life and damage due to a combination of environmental and human factors. By analysing media coverage, interviews, and testimonies from people directly affected, we identified the kinds of information that were most needed but often missing during the emergency. The eight points focus on helping people communicating risk to ensure that flood risk messages are clear, actionable, and tailored to their audience. Whether you work in government, emergency services, or community planning, this resource provides practical advice for improving communication during flood crises. 📌 Swipe to explore the eight points below 👇 and for more information, read the full resource and watch the videos here http://bit.ly/4mo1P7b 🔍 Leonor Sierra Maricarmen Climént Lloyd's Register Foundation LRF Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk
