Grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Leaders’ Forum for Professor Johan Rockström, hosted by Temasek Trust. The NUS Sustainability community at the National University of Singapore looks forward to collaborating with Professor Rockström and the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in advancing solutions on climate, biodiversity, water, food and public health, especially for the SE Asian region. Through interdisciplinary research, capacity building and public-private-people partnerships, we will shape our sustainable future and drive meaningful change. #partnerships #ClimateAction
🌍 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦: 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 Hosted by Temasek Trust at Temasek Shophouse, the forum convened eminent leaders from across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors for a dialogue with Professor Dr. Johan Rockström, Director of the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor in Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam. Professor Dr. Rockström shared the latest scientific insights on Earth’s resilience and the transformations needed to secure a liveable future. Key insights included: 🔹 Seven of nine planetary boundaries have now been breached, including for the first time ocean acidification, weakening the resilience of Earth's systems. 🔹 Nature continues to absorb roughly half of human emissions, but this capacity is diminishing; research shows parts of the Amazon and other tropical forests are shifting from net carbon absorbers to emitters. 🔹 Global temperatures have exceeded 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels – a milestone that underscores the urgency of rapid emissions cuts. 🔹 The planet risks entering a “hothouse” trajectory, where self-reinforcing warming and ecological decline undermine human prosperity. 🔹 Asia stands at the crossroads of vulnerability and opportunity: exposed to escalating climate risks yet leading in renewable energy, electric vehicle, and nature-based innovation. 🔹 We need to phase out fossil fuels, transform food systems, shift toward largely plant-based diets that also improve health outcomes, protect nature, invest in carbon removal technologies, and adopt scientific data and metrics that guide decision-making toward a planetary turning point. While the challenges are profound, the path forward is clear – through collective action, we can build healthier societies, a safer planet, and more resilient economies for future generations. Thank you to Professor Dr. Johan Rockström for his insights, Jennifer Lewis from Temasek Trust for guiding the discussion, and to all our event attendees for their engaged participation. #TemasekTrust #ClimateAction #Partnerships

I’m excited to share the recording of Professor Johan Rockström’s NUS120 Distinguished Speaker Series lecture and fireside chat. He unpacks the Planetary Boundaries framework and reminds us that seven of nine boundaries are already breached. Drawing on decades of research in water resilience and global sustainability, he explores why we need a “planetary mission control” where science guides policy and business decisions, and he invites us to rethink prosperity within ecological limits. If you’re curious about how to thrive in the Anthropocene and want a hopeful yet clear‑eyed roadmap for our shared future, this talk is essential viewing. Watch the full lecture here: https://lnkd.in/gTF9VQ_E #NUS120 #PlanetaryBoundaries #Sustainability #JohanRockström

Seven of nine Planetary Boundaries are now breached. The Planetary Health Check 2025 confirms that ocean acidification has joined the list. This is a stark warning: more than three-quarters of the Earth’s support systems are outside the safe zone, with all seven showing worsening trends. We are witnessing a decline in planetary health. But this is not inevitable. The healing of the ozone layer and the reduction of aerosols show that it is possible to turn the direction of global development. Even with a dire diagnosis, the window of cure remains open. Failure is not inevitable, it is a choice. And it is a choice we can still avoid.
