Here’s 48 seconds from my conversation with David Droga that’ll rewire how you think about org design (𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻.) The punchline is that growth doesn’t stall because the ideas or the talent capable of driving it aren’t there, it stalls because org design too often makes it too hard for the best work to get done. As Droga said to me: “𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵...𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.” And what can happen is that which was originally designed to meet the needs of end-users winds up becoming something else entirely, something quicker to create unnecessary friction than address it, which of course just punches value creation and growth in the face. Talking about the org model he built at Accenture Song, “𝗜 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀...𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝗠𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.” Neither is yours. It’s to drive growth. And if your model isn’t designed for the people you serve…you’re going to drive less.
