YTL Hotels acquires Thistle Johor, plans 2026 relaunch as five-star property YTL Corp Bhd's hospitality arm, YTL Hotels, has acquired the 380-room Thistle Hotel in Johor Bahru from GuocoLand Ltd in a RM150 million deal, underscoring its confidence in Johor's rise as a regional economic and tourism hub. The acquisition marks a strategic expansion milestone in Malaysia's fast-growing southern corridor, where Johor is being transformed by mega infrastructure projects, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, and increasing cross-border travel with Singapore. YTL Hotels currently owns and manages more than 35 properties with over 7,000 rooms across Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Australia, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: CEO Kevin Goh highlighted how The Ascott Limited is widening our addressable markets beyond serviced residences into hotels and resorts through our 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆, adapting our portfolio of 14 brands to new formats and settings. This approach enables us to capture broader hospitality opportunities while better serving our growing base of Ascott Star Rewards members. Examples include 11 recent resort signings in popular leisure destinations, such as an Oakwood in Bali's Jimbaran Bay, a Somerset in Nha Trang, and a Citadines in Phu Quoc. Kevin outlined this strategic expansion at the 1H 2025 results briefing of CapitaLand Investment (CLI), the parent company of Ascott. The results demonstrate momentum, with CLI’s lodging business recording a 5% growth in RevPAU in the reporting period, supported by sustained ADR growth in Japan and Korea and improved occupancy in Europe. Fee-related earnings grew ~4% year-on-year to S$172 million. Vietnamese real estate developer FLC rebought flight company Bamboo Airways (started flying in 2019) just two years of last private ownership. Bamboo airlines is actually struggling with only 12 domestic routes in Vietnam and international flights license is suspended except for charter services. Prior to restructuring, the airline had 30 aircrafts flying to 66 domestic destinations and 15 international routes. Interesting carriers battle on growing Vietnamese sky, with state-owned Vietnam Airlines (with its two subsidiaries low cost Pacific Airlines and Vietnam Air Services Company VASCO), leisure carrier Bamboo Airways and low cost Vietjet as main players.
