In an interview with The Edge Singapore, Gerry Chan, CEO of the manager of CapitaLand China Trust (#CLCT), shared insights on the strategic divestment of CapitaMall Yuhuating as a seed asset to CapitaLand Commercial C-REIT (#CLCR), alongside CLCT’s proposed 5% stake in CLCR, an initiative aimed at delivering long-term sustainable returns to unitholders. The move aims to unlock value from a mature retail asset and facilitate capital recycling, which may be used to reduce leverage or a combination of deleveraging and unit buy-backs, depending on market conditions and in the best interests of unitholders. CLCT’s proposed subscription to CLCR’s IPO units also offers a gateway into the rapidly growing C-REIT market, while broadening access to domestic capital pools. Gerry noted that while CLCT is currently trading at a discount, consumption-focused C-REITs are trading at a premium to net asset value. Through this transaction, he hopes CLCT’s value arbitrage can be demonstrated, potentially narrowing the discount. If the mall can be divested at a premium, it could enhance unit price and enable CLCT to gain further financial flexibility. CLCT will convene an Extraordinary General Meeting on 29 July 2025 at 3.30 pm to seek unitholders’ approval for the proposed divestment and IPO subscription. Thank you Goola Warden for the feature. Hong Kong is steadily building the foundations of a new role: a hub for impact capital in Asia. At the AVPN Global Summit, I moderated a brilliant conversation with Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services in Hong Kong SAR; Lester Huang, Deputy Chair of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Asia’s largest charitable donor; and Tracy Palandjian, CEO of Social Finance, on what it takes to turn a world-class financial centre into an engine for social change. We explored the blueprint for an impact hub — the policy architecture, catalytic capital, and partnerships that connect global finance to local priorities. My takeaway: with the right ambition, this is a moment to design something distinctive — Hong Kong’s own model for the impact economy, one that mobilises Asia’s vast pools of capital and serves the needs and energy of over half the world’s population. We’ll be deepening this work with a new Marshall Institute – Institute of Philanthropy research project on the evolving role of philanthropy in global financial hubs, starting right here in Hong Kong. #impacteconomy #philanthropy

The HKMA is enhancing its RMB liquidity facilities to ensure sufficient market liquidity to support the expansion of offshore RMB business, and further facilitate the use of offshore RMB in the real economy. From 9 October, the HKMA will launch the RMB Business Facility (RBF), replacing the RMB Trade Financing Liquidity Facility (TFLF), in 3 phases. The RBF will offer lower interest rates, broader scope of eligible RMB financing activities — including RMB trade finance, capital expenditure, and working capital term loans — with a more streamlined process. We are also enhancing the RMB Liquidity Facility, to better meet market demands for short-term liquidity in the offshore RMB market. From 9 October, the allocation of intraday funds will increase to RMB 30 billion, while overnight funds will be set at RMB 10 billion, optimising the utilisation of the RMB 40 billion facility to support growing need for intraday liquidity in settling cross-border RMB payments. In addition, new two-week and one-month repo tenors on T+1 basis will be introduced for greater flexibility. Demand for RMB funding is rising substantially, with the loan-to-deposit ratio increasing from 20% in September 2022 to over 90% in June 2025. Corporates are increasingly seeking longer-term RMB loans, highlighting the expanding need for RMB-denominated financing solutions. These enhancements, developed in close collaboration with the People’s Bank of China, reinforce Hong Kong’s position as the global offshore RMB hub. In his latest inSight article, Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the HKMA, emphasised the HKMA’s commitment to working with Mainland authorities and market participants to explore and pursue further development of the offshore RMB market in Hong Kong.
