📣"Transcending the Boundaries of Light and Vision" POSTECH Professor Seung-Hwan Baek Receives 2025 Asiagraphics Young Researcher Award Professor Seung-Hwan Baek from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) has been awarded the prestigious "2025 Asiagraphics Young Researcher Award". The award ceremony will be held in April 2026. The Asiagraphics Young Researcher Award represents the highest honor for emerging researchers in computer graphics and interactive technology, selecting only one researcher annually from across Asia within six years of earning their doctorate. This highly competitive award recognizes exceptional contributions to the field and positions recipients as the next generation of research leaders. Professor Baek has gained international recognition for his groundbreaking research in analyzing high-dimensional visual data generated through complex interactions between light, materials, and geometric structures. His innovative work extends beyond conventional imaging by capturing and utilizing light properties that traditional cameras cannot record—specifically, the spectral (color) and polarization (vibration direction) information of light. This revolutionary approach enables the acquisition of significantly more accurate and enriched visual information from real-world environments. The applications span critical emerging technologies including autonomous vehicles, VR/AR displays, and precision scientific instrumentation. In particular, Professor Baek has extended reflection models considering polarization and built the world's first dataset measuring polarization characteristics in real environments, presenting new research directions. This research has been published at major international conferences such as SIGGRAPH and CVPR, making significant impacts not only in computer graphics and vision technology fields but also in optics. It is also gaining attention as a core technology that can simultaneously acquire an object's three-dimensional shape and position as well as texture and material properties by applying delicate information such as light color and vibration direction to imaging technology. Professor Baek expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, "This award acknowledges our research achievements in computational imaging, computer graphics, and computer vision. I am committed to continuing research to contribute to technological advancement and industrial applications in these fields."

Yieljae Shin, Yi Qiang Th'23, and Dongyeol (Shin) Jang—from Professor Hui Fang's Multifunctional Integrated NeuroElectronics (MINE) Lab at Dartmouth—are lead authors on a study demonstrating a method to achieve 3D neural probe interfacing, solving the long-running "dimensional mismatch" between typical 2D probes and the brain's 3D neural circuits. The research—supported in part by The National Institutes of Health BRAIN Initiative and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)—resulted in a unique "rolling-of-soft-electronics" (ROSE) approach to create 3D neural probes that offer both high scalability and unprecedented design flexibility.
