Dentons has been appointed by the Government of Singapore to develop the model legal framework for international carbon credit trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The Business Times quoted me recently on AI's potential impact on jobs and the economy, including in the legal sector. It's always nice to break out some of my economics training (which usually guides me only from afar). I think they will not mind me reproducing part of the article here, though the journalist had skillfully extracted key bits from my lengthy comments and weaved them in with insights from more qualified academics: <quote> This issue extends to other sectors such as legal work, which has very little margin for error. “A single missed typo in a contract could end up in a million-dollar dispute,” said SMU’s Prof Soh. He added that lawyers who use AI tools will need to worry about missed “hallucinations” – false or misleading AI-generated information presented as facts – especially in client or court documents. “The issue is tricky... lawyers will need to become adept at spotting things like fake case law and misquoted documents in a way that allows them to meaningfully use AI without spending a disproportionate amount of time correcting its errors,” he said. AI has also produced a generation of Google-informed clients who are frowned upon by medical and legal professionals. Prof Soh cited examples of clients presenting their lawyers with ChatGPT-generated legal drafts, asking them to simply build on this to “save costs”. “This may end up making things more costly as the lawyer has to first check and correct the AI’s mistakes before customising the draft for a client’s unique situation,” he explained. </quote> See https://lnkd.in/gNCDizAV

What happens when the Head of the Human Capital Department, the very person who handles the appointment and manages the emplacement of employees on fixed-term contracts (FTC), argues that his own contract was not genuine?   In this alert, Partner Amardeep Singh Toor and Associate Wong Lien Taa discuss a recent Industrial Court decision that reaffirmed the validity of the very individual’s genuine FTC, particularly in the context of Government-Linked Companies and senior management appointments.
