🌱 🌏 New report: How can renewable #hydrogen power Southeast Asia’s #energytransition? Together with the NewClimate Institute, and as part of the CASE for Southeast Asia project, we recently published a technology brief that examines the outlook for renewable hydrogen-based power generation in #SoutheastAsia, from co-firing to 100% hydrogen- or ammonia-firing. The brief assesses its potential role alongside the associated risks, offering policy considerations for governments to evaluate renewable hydrogen’s place in broader energy transition strategies. Key insights from the brief: 💡 Renewable hydrogen adds value as seasonal storage and peaking capacity. 💡 Co-firing hydrogen and ammonia in coal and gas plants offers limited emission reductions at relatively high costs. Scaling renewables and grids offer a lower-cost route to reach climate targets. 💡 What does it really take to decarbonise Southeast Asia’s energy sector?   That’s the question that Nicolas Leong, our Energy Business Director, North and Southeast Asia, addressed at the recent International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 Energy Leaders’ Roundtable Forum in Sarawak, Malaysia. Here are three key takeaways from his panel: ✅ Flexible generation is essential. Renewable energy is intermittent, and it doesn’t always match energy demand. That’s why Southeast Asia needs balancing power from flexible engine power plants and battery energy storage systems (ESS). While ESS provides fast, millisecond-level response, engine power plants offer longer-term balancing – minutes, hours, even weeks. ✅ It’s not just about technology, but also mindset and policy. To accelerate the net zero transition, the region needs: 🔸 Mindset change: Rethinking how we generate, manage, distribute, and consume electricity with flexibility, resilience, and sustainability at the core. 🔸 System planning: Integrating long-term capacity planning, regional cooperation, and holistic system modelling. 🔸 Innovative market & policy design: Markets must reward flexibility, storage, and carbon-free generation. 🔸 Stakeholder’s collaboration: Regulators, utilities, technology providers, developers, grid operators, consultants, and other stakeholders need to work together towards a single goal. ✅ Power system modelling helps countries and companies make informed choices. Wärtsilä has conducted over 200 power system modelling studies globally. These simulations show how the future grids may look like over the next 10-30 years across different scenarios.
