Honors & Awards

  • LSESU Teaching Excellence Award for Professional Mentoring and Personal Development

    LSE Students' Union

A dilemma many of us face at some point is 'what do I want to do with my life?' My students at LSE sometimes come to me with this question and I work with them over the course of the year to help them discover what they want to do when they graduate. A couple of these students nominated me for this Teaching Excellence Award and the Awards Committee selected it as the winning nomination.

With the backing of the William T Baxter Travel Scholarship I explored different initiatives and perspectives on greenhouse gas accounting in the United States. For this, I travelled to several cities and spoke with numerous academics and professionals working in the field.

With the backing of the William T Baxter Travel Scholarship I explored different initiatives and perspectives on greenhouse gas accounting in the United States. For this, I travelled to several cities and spoke with numerous academics and professionals working in the field.

I began in Chicago where I met with several individuals who ran the Chicago Climate Exchange until its sale to Intercontinental Exchange in 2010 and now continue to work in environmental futures and carbon markets. Furthermore, I met with environmental law professors and discussed the interplay between humanity and nature, from both political and historical perspectives.

After this I travelled to meet academics at Harvard and MIT working in the field of greenhouse gas accounting. These discussions highlighted several fascinating avenues for my research and added a great deal of clarity to my understanding of the field. As well as these meetings, I spent an afternoon with a co-founder of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute who is developing the leading professional certification for greenhouse gas accounting.

From Boston I moved to Washington D.C., where I met with individuals at the forefront of the field. This ranged from people at the World Resources Institute who are developing the latest corporate standards to the Head of Sustainability for Mars Corporation. Moreover, I attended the American Accounting Association’s Conference on Teaching and Learning and its Annual Conference in Washington D.C.. On the teaching side, it was useful and interesting to hear a range of ideas for building sustainability elements into financial and management accounting courses. The Annual Conference itself allowed me to meet a range of eminent academics, such as Joni Young and Bruce Carruthers, and to gain a deeper insight into the world of academia.
