Actively playing a computer game will generate more pleasure than a corresponding passive experience, such as watching a movie or reading a book. This is what common knowledge tells us. It is however not fully consistent with our research on the human reward system, and we undertook the study described in this paper to have a closer look at the differences. In this study, test participants watched videos of actors playing games as well as actively played the games themselves. The study examined how the pleasure difference of the participant's own acting versus passively watching the actions of an actor changes with the participant's level of empathy, the sympathy toward the actor, and the level of emotion displayed by the actors. Among other results, the findings indicate that a higher pleasure resulting from own actions diminishes with a higher empathy rating, with equal pleasure at about the maximum rating of 80.

Product leader: Our engineering org uses [xxxxxxx] for program/portfolio management, but I've never spent a single second in that tool. This is a mid 6, low 7-figure mystery budget line, but it also makes complete sense. Most program/portfolio tools were designed for a decades-old version of program and portfolio management. Centralized IT teams. PMO as "gate", channeling the needs of countless business groups into a centralized group of developers. Mind-numbing spreadsheets with an engineer per row...their time dolled out across projects to please the optics requirements of a disconnected finance partner. "Product managers on the business side, POs on the 'tech side'". Teams measured on ‘say do’ ratios and ‘predictability’ The world has changed for many companies. Those models don't cut it anymore. Teams/groups are more independent. They are aligned around outcomes. Yes, you still have cross-cutting dependencies and strategic initiatives, but the PMO is no longer the gate, report generator, and glorified scaled project manager. Companies are looking for other solutions — and it shows. 1. Mad-scientist no-code setups that work brilliantly until the person who built them leaves. 2. Over-customized frontline tools that eventually become unusable for everyone. 3. Rigid platforms that force teams to work their way instead of adapting to yours. 4. OKR tools that handle goals well but only solve one part of the puzzle. If anyone of this resonates...reach out.

Every product PRD going forward must be written for two audiences: the people using your product and the agents acting on their behalf. Most teams write PRDs around human workflows: jobs to be done, user goals, friction points. That’s necessary. But it’s quickly becoming insufficient. We’re entering a split-mode world. In the near future, every great product will require two modes: 1. How I work for humans 2. How I work for agents If you ignore the second, you’ll ultimately be solving the smallest part of the problem. Agents will outnumber users. Most “users” won’t be people, they’ll be LLMs choosing tools based on affordances, metadata, and reward functions. You won’t be chosen because of a slick UX. You’ll be chosen because you’re legible, callable, and reliably useful in a multi-agent stack. The products that work best for agents will get picked first. That’s the new first-mover advantage. We’re already seeing the early contours of this with MCP servers and autonomous workflows. This wave is here. The time to add this layer to your product sense isn’t “someday.” It’s now. To make your product great for agents as well as people, it needs to be usable by code with clear inputs, clear outputs, and a clear reason to call you. Your PRDs need to define this.

🚨 Warning to all Product Builders: Uber just launched Simple Mode. Initially designed for older adults, Simple Mode allows users to take away all the clutter and instead use core functionality like ordering a ride. But simple mode just looks like Uber when it first launched: core customer needs are prioritized. 🤔 If you need to create a “simple mode,” it means your product is now too complex and you’ve lost sight of the core product goals and user needs.
