South Korean shipping company HMM has entered a R&D partnership with four subsidiaries of shipbuilder Hanwha Group and classification society Korean Register (KR) to design a new propulsion system for vessels that will generate thrust from ammonia-based gas turbine and electrical power from fuel cells. GTT has informed ship.energy that it is working with Bloom Energy to develop an integrated energy system combining solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) powered by LNG with onboard carbon capture that will be installed on the wind-assisted Swap2Zero cruise vessel that Ponant Explorations will be introducing by 2030. GTT will design and develop the carbon capture system to be compatible with Bloom Energy’s SOFC technology. Class society Lloyd’s Register has released updated Guidance Notes on the Installation of Fuel Cells on Ships which includes recent regulatory updates and introduces two safety concepts for fuel cell spaces. The safety concepts relate to emergency shutdown-protected fuel cell spaces and gas-safe fuel cell spaces. The gas-safe fuel cell space concept enables installation of fuel cell power systems within conventional machinery spaces and simplifies retrofitting, while ensuring compliance with fire protection, explosion prevention, and hazardous zone requirements.
