Over the past two years,
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a significant destination for footballers departing Europe.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2023 switch to Al Nassr turned global attention to the Saudi Pro League. Since then, more stars have followed, attracted by financial rewards. And improved facilities, and the chance to extend their playing careers.
Karim Benzema leaves Real Madrid for Al Ittihad move
Karim Benzema, the Ballon d’Or winner and Real Madrid legend, shocked many by ending his long spell in Spain for a move to Al Ittihad. His transfer came with a contract worth far more than anything offered in Europe. For Benzema, the deal provided financial security and the opportunity to play. That too, without the same physical pressure of La Liga.
Al Ittihad, one of the top Saudi clubs, has invested heavily in its squad to strengthen its domestic and continental presence. Benzema’s arrival brought experience. Also, attention and leadership. This aligned with the club’s ambition to become a powerhouse in Asia.
N’Golo Kante and Roberto Firmino join Saudi league sides
Soon after Benzema, N’Golo Kanté also chose Al Ittihad, teaming up with his former French teammate. Kante, a Premier League and World Cup winner, cited the competitive but less demanding environment as a reason for his decision. His move added midfield stability to the Saudi champions while allowing him to continue at a high level despite recent injuries.
Roberto Firmino, who left Liverpool after eight successful years, signed with Al Ahli. Known for his flair and creativity, Firmino brought both star power and entertainment value to the league, for players like him. Saudi Arabia offered consistent playing time and a contract that ensured stability for the next phase of his career.
Young midfielder Gabri Veiga signs with the Al Ahli club
While veterans dominate the headlines, Saudi Arabia is also attracting young players. Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga, just 20, joined Al Ahli from Celta Vigo for €30 million. The move came as a surprise to many, as he was expected to join a European club. For Veiga, Saudi Arabia offered first-team opportunities and financial security at an early stage in his career.
This signals that the league is not just a final stop for older stars but a serious option for ambitious youngsters. Other young talents, including Angelo Gabriel and Marcos Leonardo, have also taken the same path.
Saudi Arabia’s strategy is clear: combine experienced legends with upcoming prospects to build long-term credibility. With Vision 2030 driving investment, the country is building infrastructure and attracting global attention. And challenging Europe’s dominance in football, whether the Saudi Pro League can maintain this momentum remains to be seen. But its rise has already changed the transfer landscape.
Saudi Arabia’s football appeal continues to grow, attracting both seasoned stars like Ronaldo, Benzema, Kante, and Firmino, as well as promising youngsters like Gabri Veiga, combining experience and youth for long-term league growth.
