It was a huge thrill for the 89up team to work with Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and England and Chelsea Football Club goalkeeper Hannah Hampton for World Sight Day. The Duchess is a Global Ambassador for our client IAPB and a tireless campaigner for eye health. This is the fifth World Sight Day that 89up has helped IAPB celebrate. Along with global coverage outlining the economic benefits for nations in investing in eye health, here in the UK we’ve partnered with Hannah and Women's Health magazine to get the message across: Love Your Eyes! Hannah Hampton is a woman at the top of her game. As Chelsea goalkeeper, she was instrumental in their incredible unbeaten Women’s Super League 2024/2025 season. And as goalkeeper for England’s Lionesses, her penalty heroics led to their successful defence of their title as European champions. Just last month she was awarded the Yashin trophy, recognising her as the world’s best goalkeeper. Hannah was born with the eye condition strabismus, which affects depth perception. But she hasn’t let that stop her reaching the pinnacle of her sport. Today she was honoured by IAPB with a Love Your Eyes Special Recognition Award - not just for her achievements on the field, but for her open and frank discussion of her eye condition, and the incredible example she sets to young people who may suffer stigma over eye conditions like hers. In the past, we’ve led campaigns to destigmatise the glasses-wearing “nerd” emoji, held a Glasses of the Future competition for children across the world, built an online quiz to check how well consumers are loving their eyes, and created “back to school” packs to encourage regular eye testing for children. Working with IAPB has helped 89up sharpen our vision of how we can help make the world a better place by advocating for health interventions. To find out more about what we do and how we do it, get in touch in the comments or via our website.

Last night, and after Labour Party Conference, we joined 89up’s Civil Society Social Club at Labour Party Conference - an evening bringing together non-profits, foundations, senior politicians and journalists to share ideas and connect. It was a great opportunity to network, exchange perspectives and highlight the role of civil society in driving change. What a few weeks it’s been in the office… The Gran Squad have officially landed, and they mean business. Sledgehammers, pickaxes and a 'Granifesto' with one simple message: Scotland needs more social homes, and it needs them now. It's been such a joy (and a lot of hard work!) bringing this campaign to life. A massive shout-out to the brilliant team at 89up for their creativity, and to my colleagues at Shelter Scotland for making it all happen. Proud to have worked on this one. Now it’s over to you 👉 Will you stand with the Grans? Email Scotland's party leaders to demand action (link below).

The far right is on the rise. How do we fight back? Next week at #LabourConference2025 we’re bringing campaigners, filmmakers and politicians together for a powerful fringe event about how we can tackle the far right through media. Hosted by Tigerlily Productions and Marking Films Ltd, creators of the BAFTA-nominated documentary UNDERCOVER: Exposing the Far Right, this session will reveal the tactics extremists use to infiltrate our communities and how we can counter them. Chaired by The Lead's Zoë Grünewald, panellists include Director of UNDERCOVER, Havana Marking, Director of Research at HOPE not hate, Joe Mulhall, and Patrick Hurley MP for Southport - who witnessed first-hand the unrest sparked by far-right mobilisation during last summer’s riots. 📅 Monday 29 Sept | ⏰ 12–1pm | 📍 Camp and Furnace, Liverpool (no pass needed) This is your chance to be part of a vital conversation on how we dismantle far-right narratives and build stronger, fairer communities. 🌍 New op-ed in The New Humanitarian The race for critical minerals is accelerating but the story driving it is wrong. Minerals policy is framed as a technical supply chain challenge: secure supply, manage risk, move on. But this misses a bigger picture. Extraction is political. It’s about power, governance, and crucially, who gets to share in the value. In a new piece for The New Humanitarian, our Associate Research Director Nicholas Pope, together with Emily Iona Stewart of Global Witness, argues for a justice-focused narrative that puts governance, equity, and accountability at the centre of the minerals transition. With important summits like the G7 Conference on Critical Materials and Minerals and COP30 on the horizon, these are the moments to shift the story and the rules. Heading into COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the gap between what was promised and what is delivered isn’t just financial. It’s structural and it’s colonial. Credit ratings, inflated risk premiums, and MDB rules keep Global South countries trapped in debt, paying more to borrow while facing the sharpest climate impacts. In our latest piece, we unpack why the new $300bn finance goal still falls short and why debt relief, concessional finance, and climate reparations must be on the table. Read more and subscribe for the next insights. ⬇️ At 89up, we will be on the ground at COP30 in Belém working with partners. Let’s talk if you’d like to discuss collaborations.

As COP30 approaches, Lula’s international image as a climate leader is increasingly at odds with the political realities at home. In our latest piece, Pará-based journalist Daleth Oliveira and São Paulo-based journalist Sam Cowie unpack the contradictions shaping Brazil’s environmental future, from progress on deforestation and enforcement to rollback threats in Congress, the legacy of megaprojects, and the rising influence of organised crime in the Amazon. Read the full story and subscribe to get the next insights direct to your inbox. 👇 At 89up, we’re working with partners across Brazil and beyond to understand the narrative, political and power dynamics shaping this year’s COP. We’ll be on the ground in Belém. Let’s talk if you’d like to discuss collaborations.
