A huge thank you to the team at National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) and Police Digital Service (PDS) for delivering such a thoughtful and well-executed conference earlier this week. The team at Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) had a truly great time engaging with the sessions, conversations, and brilliant networking too. We were especially inspired by the range of topics covered, from digital innovation and operational transformation to collaborative partnerships around public safety, and we were grateful for the opportunity to share ACE’s work on Prometheus. Thank you in particular to the organisers, the speakers who generously shared their insight and experience, and to everyone who took the time to connect. Events like this remind us why partnership, innovation, and shared learning are so critical in policing and public service. We look forward to continuing the conversations we had. Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE)
Government Administration
A Home Office unit solving frontline digital & technology challenges through partnership with private sector & academia
About us
The Accelerated Capability Environment is a Home Office unit that takes a highly innovative and disruptive approach to solving technology and data problems facing public sector agencies, primarily in law enforcement and national security. It is a partnership between public and private sectors, engaging the most advanced and forward-looking technology capabilities from the carefully selected members of its Vivace industry and academic community, the majority of whom are SMEs and start-ups. ACE has developed ways of working and commercial mechanisms that allow this partnership between public and private sectors to deliver front-line mission impact significantly faster than through traditional procurement routes.

Innovation only works if people know how to use it. ACE brought its deep expertise in driving innovation to help the Home Office explore how teams can get hands-on with the tools and techniques that make change happen. As part of the cross-government One Big Thing initiative, we looked at how to build confidence, familiarity, and empowerment, so innovation becomes part of the everyday. How do you future-proof policing tech? The National Police Chiefs’ Council needed a smarter way to spot when national technology capabilities are nearing obsolescence, so investment goes where it matters most. ACE coordinated and tested a National Prioritisation Model that helps decision-makers weigh up new innovations against existing services, ensuring the right tech gets the right funding at the right time. Investigators across law enforcement face the same challenges every day: - Critical information hidden in multiple systems - Analysis that takes longer than it should - Duplication and rework that waste valuable time. Commissioned by the National Data and Analytics Office, Prometheus has been developed to improve the speed at which digital devices seized from a suspect can be examined, helping investigators: · Connect information across systems for a clearer case picture · Spot links and patterns in days, not weeks · Focus resources where they’re needed most. While currently in pilot phase and live across five forces, we have been working closely with the Police Digital Service through the National Police Capability Environment Policing (NPCE), ensuring that long-term, if a product works well, it isn’t just a one-off pilot but scalable, secure, and nationally available. But Prometheus isn’t just a product. It’s a philosophy: - Make data usable - Scale what works - Drive outcomes that matter. This is how ACE works: testing quickly, convening partners, and delivering innovation into the hands of those who need it most. For policymakers, it’s a model of how data-driven innovation translates into real impact. Prometheus shows how technology can become outcomes, and outcomes can become impact. ACE has spent the last few weeks touring the UK attending five Civil Service Live events. From Cardiff to Glasgow, our colleagues met civil servants up and down the country to explain what ACE does and explore how they can make use of ACE services to innovate and tackle challenges within their teams. We’re really excited to be taking forward new commissions with some of the people we met along the way. As well as continuing our core work to deliver innovative commissions across government, ACE is pleased to announce we now have a refined research capability. We have access to thousands of innovators across government, academia, large industry, SMEs and the startup community enabling ACE to conduct research by accessing diverse expertise at pace. This allows us to unearth novel insights and enables our customers to learn about the future from those who are creating it. In the last year alone, we have supported government partners with research into: - AI and national security - Emerging tools for deepfake detection - Helping police understand the criminal implications of AI. We've now created a simple, flexible menu of options to make it easier for our customers to commission research, no matter how early or advanced their thinking is. ACE's new research model includes: - a new pool of expert research partners, selected through open competition, to access a wider variety of expertise across our community - tailored governance to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and deliver better value for money - a renewed focus on tangible outcomes that support forward planning and mission impact - a set menu of fixed price methodologies for transparency and speed. And what if your requirements don't quite fit the menu? That's fine too. You can still commission research through ACE in the normal way. This change supports ACE's mission to bring together expertise from industry and academia to innovate collaboratively and deliver front-line mission impact at pace. Big thanks to the team who have brought this to life - especially those who helped review our highest ever number of bids and the customers who helped shape the menu. We're excited to roll this out - and early commissions are already underway. If you're a customer with questions or would like to see the menu or to explore how this works in more detail, don't hesitate to get in touch: [email protected]. #PublicSectorInnovation #MissionImpact #ACE #PolicyInnovation Sam Brooks Simon Christoforato Prof. Annette Southgate Stuart Christmas Richard Blake MCIPS Alex Wood Iain Wallace Cambridge Consultants University of Portsmouth Crest Advisory Cardinal Insights Obidos Consulting Limited GovCats Paradigm Junction Paul Ridgewell Stuart Ravens Papaya Insights
