Is your ISO certificate Valid? Many businesses proudly display their ISO certifications — only to discover during a client audit or government tender that it isn't UKAS accredited and won’t be accepted. One of the most common mistakes we see? Companies unknowingly using cheaper certification bodies, whose certificates aren’t recognised by enterprises or public sector bodies. There is a reason they are cheaper - they don't need to follow the same rigorous audit process. If your ISO certificate doesn’t come from a UKAS-accredited body (or IAF-recognised body abroad), it will not be recognised by the UK government or enterprise clients who check. Eating your own dogfood. You've probably heard the phrase, but what does it mean and where did it come from? Perhaps the best origin story was told by Warren Harrison, a Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University, in the IEEE Software magazine of May-June 2006. He had heard that the president of the Kal Kan Pet Food company ate a tin of dogfood at each annual shareholders' meeting to demonstrate confidence in the quality of the product. Kal Kan dogfood appeared in the film Back To The Future and was the brand used by Doc Brown to feed his dog, Einstein, with an automatic feeder of the Doc's own invention. The company was later (or earlier) acquired by Mars, Inc. in 1968 (did you know that they make more money from petcare than from chocolate?) with the dogfood being rebranded Pedigree Chum and the catfood Whiskas. Anyway, I digress. Nowadays, the term refers to a company using its own products, especially software products. This usage was coined within Microsoft in the late 80s when manager Paul Maritz sent an email entitled "Eating our own dogfood" that urged staff to increase internal usage of the company's software. Had he heard the same dogfood story as Warren Harrison? Who knows. At Adoptech, we are big fans of dogfooding: we used our own platform to achieve ISO27001 certification. Our entire team knows exactly how our product works because they use it all the time in a real-world environment. Dogfooding should never be viewed as a substitute for a rigorous QA process - it's obviously preferable to fix bugs before they end up in production.
