Our mission is to lead technology in air transport: to raise ambition, realise potential and maximise the UK's impact.
About us
The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) is an independent organisation that works alongside government and industry to transform aerospace through technology and innovation. The ATI is funded equally by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and by industrial recipients of project grants. ATI projects are chosen and overseen through close collaboration with Innovate UK and DBT. Our role is to establish a challenging technology strategy for the sector and to develop a portfolio of research and technology activity to realise that strategy, exploiting the sector's strengths and helping UK aerospace to reach its full potential in the global market.

📣 The ATI is introducing a new streamlined first-stage application process for its flagship funding programme, the Strategic Programme. Swipe to hear what Paul Adams, Chief Innovation Officer, had to say on the announcement. 👉 From 1st January 2026, applicants to the Strategic Programme will submit a 15-slide presentation via the ATI website. If the project is in scope of the ATI technology strategy, applicants will be invited to present their project proposal to a panel of ATI assessors. If successful at Outline Stage, applicants will be invited to complete a Full Stage Application process via the government’s Innovation Funding Service (IFS). The existing form-based Expression of Interest process via IFS will end after the final applications are submitted in November 2025. Got any questions? Join our open webinar where the we'll share more detail on the Strategic Programme's new Outline Stage application process and answer your questions during a Q&A session. 📍 10:00 – 11:00am on Tuesday 28th October 2025 The ATI Programme is delivered in partnership with the Department for Business and Trade and Innovate UK. Recently, our Chief Technology Officer, Jacqueline Castle, spoke at the 5th Women in Aerospace event, joining over 60 women coming together to inspire the next generation. The event held at the Whittle Laboratory in University of Cambridge also provided a fantastic opportunity to tour the New Whittle Lab - a brand new facility designed as the UK's Integrated Technology Accelerator. #Aerospace #Innovation #WomeninAerospace #Aviation
Aerospace is a frontier growth sector — and its future will be written by diverse teams tackling the toughest challenges of our time. That was the message this week from Prof Julia Sutcliffe, Chief Scientist Department for Business and Trade , delivered a powerful keynote at the 5th Women in Aerospace event at the Whittle Laboratory in University of Cambridge. Over 60 women — half final-year graduates and half senior leaders — came together through the EPSRC CDT in Future Propulsion and Power to inspire the next generation to transform aerospace and drive UK growth. They heard from Prof Julia Sutcliffe, Prof Dame Ann Dowling, and Prof Jacqueline Castle (CTO of the Aerospace Technology Institute), and toured the New Whittle Lab — a £58m Cambridge investment we move into on 17 October. The Lab’s mission: to deliver transformative, hardware-intensive technologies at unprecedented pace across aviation, energy, and defence — ensuring the UK captures the industries of the future. And as Julia reminded us, those futures will be built by diverse teams. The ATI Project of the Year Award celebrates a project funded through the ATI Programme that has concluded or reached a significant milestone in the last year. Last year, this award was given to ZeroAvia and the HyFlyer II project, which has challenged conventional wisdom, taken risks and provided valuable lessons to support the aerospace sector’s journey towards Net Zero. During HyFlyer II, ZeroAvia grew its UK full-time employees from below 40 to over 250, established partnerships with world-leading OEMs, including Textron and De Havilland of Canada, and the project was integral to securing Series C investment. The company now plans significant investment in UK manufacturing, with a proposed Hydrogen Centre of Excellence for production, assembly and testing of fuel cell power generation systems. Who will be crowned ATI Project of the Year in 2025? Nominate here for our six awards categories: www.ati.org.uk/awards/ Nominations close 23:59 on Tuesday 30th September 2025 #ATIAwards #Aerospace #Aviation #Technology #ATIConference

The ATI Hub Breakthrough Award celebrates the most promising startup. At the 2024 ATI Conference, this was awarded to ToffeeX, a startup that is revolutionising the design of heat exchangers. Effective thermal management and efficient coolant systems are critical for, among other areas, the electrification of aircraft systems and hydrogen fuel cells. Originating from Imperial College London, ToffeeX’s software has enabled the design of heat exchangers that are 31% to 50% more efficient than current solutions, resulting in more compact designs, reduced weight, and a volume decrease of over 50%. The company now employs 27 people and has successfully secured seed and Series A funding from investors. 📣 Calling all UK-based startups that have been active in the aerospace sector since 2020 - could you be the next breakthrough winner? Nominate here: www.ati.org.uk/awards/ Nominations close 23:59 on Tuesday 30th September 2025 #ATIAwards #Aerospace #Aviation #Technology #ATIConference
