Today is WORLD 🌍 OBESITY DAY 🌍 World Obesity Day and Pancake Day 🥞Collide—A Stark Reminder of the Food Industry’s Influence 💡What Does Pancake Day Have to Do with Obesity? As World Obesity Day 2025 coincides with Shrove Tuesday on March 4th, it’s a timely moment to highlight how food marketing and media influence our eating habits—and, ultimately, public health. 💡The True Meaning of Pancake Day 🥞 Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday was a Christian observance focused on consuming surplus ingredients like eggs, milk, and fat before the fasting period of Lent. The term “Shrove” originates from “shrive,” meaning absolution through confession—a time for spiritual reflection and restraint. Over the years, however, Pancake Day has evolved into a highly commercialised event, with supermarkets pushing special promotions and media running extensive advertising campaigns, encouraging unnecessary consumption. 💡Marketing and the Obesity Crisis This transformation exemplifies how food industries drive consumption, prioritizing profit over health. In 2024, growing awareness emerged about the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on public health, regardless of body weight. As Dr. Chris van Tulleken has emphasised: ➡️ UPFs are designed for corporate profit—not nutrition. ➡️ They now make up 60% of the average UK diet. ➡️ UPFs are linked to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, anxiety, depression, inflammatory conditions, and cancer. 💡Shifting the Focus: Changing Systems, Not Blaming Individuals For too long, society has pushed the “Eat Less, Move More” narrative as a solution to obesity. However, research and lived experiences tell us that obesity is far more complex. 🌍 This World Obesity Day, we at All About Obesity CIC are focusing on changing the systems that contribute to rising obesity levels. Over the past year, we have engaged in vital discussions, from policy debates to public education initiatives. 💡Join the Conversation: Let’s Change the System! Obesity is not an individual failure—it’s a public health issue shaped by economic, social, and environmental factors. We urge governments, healthcare professionals, advocates, and the public to work together for a healthier future. Share your lived experiences. Make your voice heard. www.allaboutobesity.org Together, we can build a system that supports better health for all. #WorldObesityDay #ObesityAwareness #ChangeTheSystem #PancakeDay #UltraProcessedFoods #AllAboutObesity Reset Health Roczen All About Obesity CIC World Obesity Federation
