Across the world, many young people - often referred to as the Gen Z movement – are taking to the streets and fighting for their future. Amnesty International spoke to some young activists who took part in recent protests and shared why they were determined to protest, despite the dangers they face: https://amn.st/6043A2roB Instead of supporting the right to peaceful protest, security forces are responding worldwide with unlawful force, putting peoples’ lives in danger and causing bodily harm. This follows a global trend of misuse of policing equipment in protests that has Amnesty has been documenting. #ProtectTheProtest ✊

Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law. By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. We support people to claim their rights through education and training.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos were African-American track and field athletes who raised their fists during the 1968 Summer Olympics during the US national anthem to protest racism and discrimination. A new World Record, Gold and bronze medals Right fist raised in solidarity Left fist for unity A bead necklace to honour lives lost to racist violence A black scarf for pride and strength Socks without shoes for poverty and racial inequality An unforgettable stand for human rights. Protest has long been a powerful act against racial injustice, poverty, and discrimination. #ProtectTheProtest: We won’t imagine a world without it.

World leaders came together yesterday for a summit in Egypt and signed an agreement to consolidate the ceasefire after the release of hostages from Gaza and Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Israel. There must now be a full cessation of hostilities in the occupied Gaza Strip. Israel, as the occupying power, is responsible for ensuring the survival of Palestinians in Gaza it must now immediately lift its unlawful blockade and allow unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.

The trade in tools of torture is currently out of control. For too long, states have ignored the trade and allowed the export of equipment used for torture and other ill-treatment. Tools of torture include inherently abusive equipment as well as the abusive use of policing equipment, such as batons, restraints, rubber bullets and tear gas, that has been used to intimidate, repress and punish protesters, human rights defenders and others, during the policing of demonstrations and in places of detention, in all regions. In a positive development, the Council of Europe has now decided to further strengthen regional standards on the trade in goods that can be used for torture or other ill-treatment, expressed its support for a global Torture-Free Trade Treaty and encouraged its 46 member States to coordinate their action to this end at the United Nations. #ProtectTheProtest

Alongside #ProtectNotSurveil coalition, my colleague Mher Hakobyan (he/him) and I have published an advocacy briefing on defending the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in the digital age. We hope it is a useful advocacy resource for activists, advocates, civil society actors and refugee and migrant communities impacted by digital technologies and surveillance in asylum and migration contexts. It provides a human rights framework and principles through which to analyze the impact of emerging and existing technologies, including how to consider discriminatory and intersectional impacts. It also provides advocacy recommendations that can be taken from the document and given directly to key stakeholders developing and/or deploying digital technologies and surveillance, namely States, companies, inter-governmental organizations, and service providers. https://lnkd.in/e8ardPmG

Activists on board on the Gaza-bound Sumud flotilla carrying aid reported explosions and multiple drone attacks against their boats while sailing in international waters off Greece on the way to carry out a peaceful mission, in solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide, by breaking Israel’s cruel and unlawful blockade. These attacks, along with the Israeli authorities threatening and dehumanizing statements against the flotilla endanger the lives of the crews of the flotilla and are a shameless attempt to intimidate them and their supporters. Given states’ inaction in the face of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and lack of implementation of the ICJ’s orders that Israel allow humanitarian access to Gaza, activists have decided to take peaceful measures to break Israel’s 18-year illegal blockade. States have a responsibility to ensure the safe passage of the flotilla, especially as they have repeatedly failed to get Israel to comply with its most basic obligations to ensure Palestinians in Gaza have adequate access to food, water, medicine and other supplies indispensable to their survival. They must step up pressure on Israel to ensure safe passage for the flotilla and to lift the blockade once for all. There can be no justification for obstructing life-saving aid from reaching Gaza.

In a world where headlines move faster than ever, staying informed can feel really overwhelming. Some of us check the news daily, while others take a step back for their own wellbeing. We're curious...how often (if ever) do you watch or read the news?
