Our new film showcases how Total Design principles are shaping the reconstruction of vital infrastructure across Peru - delivering over 140 integrated projects that include schools, health centres and flood protection systems. Working alongside Mace, Gleeds, and the Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN), we’ve helped establish a delivery model rooted in resilience, sustainability and long-term social value. From digital design processes and nature-based solutions, to facilities planned around the people who use them, each decision is guided by five core drivers: resilience, sustainability, people-focused design, collaboration and legacy. These are not just projects - they’re platforms for lasting impact, tailored to local needs and designed for life. At Arup, resilience is about more than just infrastructure, it’s about people. A road that stays open during a flood means essential services can continue to operate. A street designed for extreme heat makes daily life safer and more comfortable for people of all ages. A well-planned transport network helps communities quickly recover from disruption. Our guide Road to Resilience shares practical insights from 10 projects around the world, from Madagascar to Ireland, from Uzbekistan to Australia, all working to create more resilient and adaptable road networks. Earlier in the month we released the results of our global survey, Embracing AI: reshaping today’s cities and built environment. It reveals how architects, engineers, and city planners around the world are already using specialist AI tools to transform how they work, far beyond chatbots and large language models like ChatGPT. Is climate resilience a new measure of urban success? Our cities are increasingly impacted by extreme weather events, with devastating effects on their residents, infrastructure and economies. And by many reports, this trend is likely to accelerate. Cities that prioritise climate resilience aren’t just protecting their communities—they’re securing their future competitiveness. Arup recent study "City Competitiveness Redefined", underscores this shift - demonstrating that cities with strong climate strategies are more attractive to investors, businesses, and talent. Thanks to Reuters for featuring the research. https://lnkd.in/g5teeyZj

Data centres’ environmental impact goes beyond their footprint—95% of nature-related effects can come from the value chain. At Arup, we use frameworks such as the TNFD to tackle these upstream challenges. Integrating value chain interventions with nature-based onsite designs such as green walls, sustainable drainage systems, and natural landscaping allows us to create regenerative solutions. Meet Bob Lau, our Director of Building Services, who played a key role in designing the building services system at Kai Tak Stadium. With a genuine passion for creating memorable user experiences, Bob and his team explored how to keep spectators cool – without the need to chill the entire stadium. The result is a smart bowl cooling system that delivers refreshing air directly beneath each seat. Developed through detailed airflow studies and advanced computer simulations, the system ensures both comfort and energy efficiency. Nothing brings Bob more pride than hearing how much people enjoy their time in the stadium. Designing for people, nature and the future of infrastructure. Together with Seán Harrington Architects, we’ve been named the winner of the national design competition for a new low-carbon footbridge as part of the Lower Thames Crossing. Our design removes all concrete from the structure and integrates planting to support biodiversity - reconnecting walking and cycling routes that link local communities to green spaces, including Thames Chase Forest Centre and the new Hole Farm Community Woodland. This footbridge is part of a broader vision for the UK’s greenest road scheme; one that puts nature, access, and sustainability at the heart of its design. A new landmark for Oslo is taking shape. We’re working alongside Nordic Office of Architecture Norway and Rodeo arkitekter on the winning design for NRK’s new headquarters; a media hub set to transform how Norway’s national broadcaster creates, collaborates and connects. Spanning 60,000m², the new facility brings together studios, post-production spaces, newsrooms and workshops in a four-storey base, topped by a distinctive circular structure that will offer panoramic views across the city, and become an iconic part of Oslo’s skyline. Our architecture team in the UK is helping deliver a workspace designed for tomorrow’s media needs - flexible, sustainable and built to spark creativity at every turn. Our values were shaped by the beliefs and thinking of our founder, the engineer and philosopher Ove Arup. He believed that being human and friendly was at the heart of who we are and fundamental to what makes Arup successful. Today, we are a much larger, but we remain focused on being the humane organisation Ove Arup described. Climate change consultant Emma Lancaster explains what it means to her: #WeAreArup
