Calling all senior figures involved in the energy and built environment industries. BE News is holding a ‘Spotlight on Power’ event exploring ‘The Industry’s Greatest Challenge… and Opportunity’ from 5pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday 11 November at host Avison Young │ UK’s office at The Met, 24 Percy St, London W1T 2BS – and you are invited! Organised by BE News, the only quality, free-to-air news service that covers the entire built environment industry, the free-to-attend event, which is sponsored by SEGRO plc and Greenvolt Next , will be attended by up to 100 senior figures and decision makers from across the built environment and energy industries and public sector. The 2.5-hour event will kick off with a keynote speech, which will be followed by a one-hour Question Time-style panel debate moderated by BE News editor-in-chief Liz Hamson and an opportunity to network with some of the most dynamic figures from across the built environment and energy industries. The debate could not be more timely. Power is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the UK built environment industry. Outdated grid infrastructure, electrification, net-zero targets, soaring demand from power-hungry sectors (such as data centres and life sciences) and the phasing out of fossil fuels are just some of the factors stymying development, with the outlook particularly bleak in locations such as West London, where some developers have been told there will be no new grid connections available until 2035. The problem is not so much lack of power as lack of access to power in a grossly inefficient system. So, how do improve access and ensure power is getting to where it is needed? What can be done to boost the UK’s power resilience? How do we turn what is currently the industry’s biggest challenge into its biggest opportunity? These are just some of the questions we will be asking – and hopefully answering – during this highly topical event. Spaces are strictly limited and expected to go fast, so if you are interested in attending, please register your interest with Sian Wilde at [email protected] or BE News editor-in-chief Liz Hamson at [email protected] by 5pm on Monday 20 October.

Some good news for the UK economy: car sales in September were the highest since 2020, with strong growth in fleet and electric vehicle purchases - a sign that businesses and consumers are still willing to spend. At the same time, global stock markets have had a solid year, with the FTSE 100, S&P 500 and DAX all posting double-digit gains. Despite a tough backdrop, confidence hasn’t disappeared. Last week, our Head of Sustainability and Decarbonisation Chris Wright spoke at the Bisnow UK ESG Real Estate Conference on driving value across the asset lifecycle. Chris shared practical insights for landlords on how to approach decarbonisation with impact, while optimising costs: ➡️Audit & optimise - many impactful actions are low or no cost ➡️Align decarbonisation spend with essential upgrades - it may cost less than you think ➡️Remember: doing nothing still costs A huge thank you to Bisnow for hosting such an insightful discussion, and to Chris’ fellow panellists Rob West Laura Thrower Pierre-Etienne Accarier and moderator Mark Faithfull - for sharing their perspectives on the evolving ESG landscape. #UKESGRealEstate #SustainableRealEstate #CarbonReduction #NetZeroBuildings #decarb #AYdifference

🎉 Big day for our colleagues in Stoke-on-Trent as they start in our new office! Over 50 of our colleagues will be based at The Pavilion, Goods Yard. A Capital&Centric development with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, close to the train station. We’ve been in the city since the 1990s and are proud of our roots there. Hugely excited by the fantastic new space (some say it's probably the best in the city!) creating a vibrant new home for our team.✨ Thanks to our fabulous project team for getting us to occupancy on time and on budget. A new community-led café has opened its doors at The Vench in Lockleaze, Bristol and we’re proud to have played our part in bringing it to life. Working pro bono, our team supported the project from concept to completion, designing, securing planning permission, tendering works, and project managing the transformation of shipping containers into a vibrant new café and community hub. The new Vench Corner Café will not only serve great food and coffee but also create training and volunteering opportunities, helping local people build skills in hospitality and customer service. This project is a great example of how collaboration and professional expertise can deliver lasting social impact. Huge thanks to The Vench team and all partners involved. #Bristol #Placemaking #CommunityImpact

While recent UK economic news has been largely downbeat, there was a glimmer of optimism last week. The Nationwide House Price Index rose by 2.2% year-on-year in September, beating expectations, and mortgage approvals held up better than forecast. However, commercial activity remains subdued, with the UK PMI revised down to 50.1—just above the threshold for growth. Businesses appear cautious ahead of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement on 26 November. It’s a complex picture, and one that will continue to evolve as policymakers respond.
