New report: Workforce ready: Supporting Young People with the Employability Skills that Businesses Need for Growth To achieve the UK’s growth ambitions, businesses need access to skilled, work-ready talent. At Barclays, we work with over one million UK businesses, many tell us that the skills gap and hiring young people with the right skills remains a challenge to their growth. For over 12 years, Barclays LifeSkills has supported young people in developing the core, transferable employability skills employers need. Our learnings show us that systemic, workable changes are needed in national education and skills policy. It is vital that government, business and education work collaboratively to rethink how core, transferable employability skills are taught and recognised in schools. By empowering young people with the right skills, we can help them to get into and thrive in the workforce —and help drive economic growth across the UK. In April, non-essential spend growth reached its highest level since 2023, no doubt helped by the month's sunshine and the long Easter weekend, as garden centres saw a 25% uplift in spending vs last year. Meanwhile seven in 10 consumers said they wanted to support UK businesses by buying products made in Britain. It still remains to be seen how US tariffs will impact the UK economy, but our latest Consumer Spend Report shows that potential price rises are a concern for many households. Despite this uncertainty, consumers are remaining resilient, with 74% confident in their ability to live within their means. In light of the recent reduction in interest rates and the positive momentum in many spending categories, there is cause to be optimistic about the forecast for the summer months, especially if the sun keeps shining! #BarclaysConsumerSpend
