We recently welcomed representatives from across the region for a gathering focused on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) mental health and wellbeing. The meeting was attended by community members, council members, education services, church leaders, healthcare professionals, educators and researchers - all committed to improving understanding, connection, and support for GRT communities. Each speaker’s contribution was followed by open discussion, giving space for reflection, collaboration and lived experience. After the presentations, attendees shared lunch together, an opportunity to connect informally, exchange ideas, and build relationships for future collaboration.

Multi award-winning museum telling the story of people in North East England in the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.
About us
Beamish is a world famous open air museum telling the story of the people of North East England during the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s. Beamish isn't a traditional museum - you won't find objects displayed in glass cases and there are no labels. At Beamish buildings collected from across the region are filled with objects illustrating the region's history, many donated by local people to help the Museum tell their story. Costumed staff and volunteers use these collections to create a living, working Museum that tells the story of everyday life in the North East of England through time. Our focus is on people and creating an authentic, immersive experience of the region's past - an experience that constantly changes with each season.

Throwback to November last year 📸 As a brand new trainee social media manager (only 2 weeks into my degree at the time!) we visited Beamish Museum Museum with the University of Sunderland, to learn how their communications team uses storytelling and digital strategy to bring history to life online.💻✨ It was inspiring to see how a heritage attraction blends creativity and analytics, using social media not just for promotion, but for genuine audience engagement and education.📈 It truly aided my understanding in how authentic storytelling builds stronger connections with audiences, consistency and creativity go hand in hand in content planning, and finally that behind every successful brand is a team that truly understands its values and voice.🗣️ A huge thank you to Julie Wilson and the Beamish team for such an insightful and memorable visit. It is a very fond memory from the start of my Social Media Management journey!😊 #SocialMediaManagement #DigitalMarketing #BeamishMuseum #UniversityOfSunderland #Storytelling #ContentStrategy

When Mary Poppins, Bert, George, and Winifred Banks visited our Photographers, they took away a fantastic Edwardian photograph to mark their visit to Beamish. We think the resulting portrait is practically perfect in every way! Sunderland Empire

Today we welcomed Mark Ferguson MP for Gateshead Central and Whickham to the museum. Our CEO Rhiannon Hiles and Chair Chris Loughran were pleased to talk to him about the museum’s role as an anchor cultural institution in the region and our impact socially, economically and environmentally, including our work with communities, health and wellbeing, learning and skills, and widening access. They also spoke about Beamish being named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2025. The visit included some of our newest additions in The 1950s Town and 1820s Pockerley, along with other areas of the museum, including exhibits from Gateshead.

Community allotments for health and wellbeing and education programmes have been opened at Beamish Museum, The Living Museum of the North, supported by funding from the Banks Group. The 12 allotment plots, in the award-winning museum’s 1950s Town, will give people the chance to get involved in gardening, including its physical and mental health benefits. Among those using the allotments will be people living with dementia or who have additional needs, carers, schoolchildren, local community groups, staff and volunteers. A fantastic day yesterday attending the Bank of England event at Beamish Museum. It was my first visit to Beamish, and it definitely won’t be my last! What an incredible place — a true celebration of our region’s history, community, and innovation. It’s a must-visit. I even popped into the Barclays branch on site — great to see our brand as part of such a unique and inspiring setting. The insights shared by the Bank of England team were excellent — exploring how they view the current economy. It’s clear the North East has a huge role to play, with manufacturing and AI will be major drivers of growth in the years ahead. At Barclays Corporate Banking, we’re committed to supporting that journey — helping businesses, innovate, invest, grow and thrive. Great to see everyone — Rhiannon Bearne, Fergus Trim, Mauricio Armellini and Gareth Harrison #Economy #Innovation #NorthEast #AI #Manufacturing #Investment #BankofEngland #BeamishMuseum #Barclays
