Two obvious ways – and one surprising way – of halving the cost of developing biologics Biologic development is crushed by time and cost. Here are two obvious ways – and one surprising way – you can more than halve it… Bear with me for a moment while we take a hypothetical example. Say you have a production cell line. Your cell expansion takes 14 days, so you get around 25 growth runs a year. You may have 20 design attributes that are critical and another 50 that are desirable, and every attribute needs 8 growths to resolve the design space. You pay £30,000 in reagents, labour and capital costs for every experiment. This all adds up to a cost over £15m and a cumulative development time of over 20 years.
