We are a member network of the British Psychological Society set up to promote the science, education and application of health psychology. The goal of health psychology is to study the psychological processes underlying health, illness and health care, and to apply these findings to the promotion and maintenance of health, the analysis and improvement of the health care system and health policy formation, the prevention of illness and disability, and the enhancement of outcomes for those who are ill or disabled.

📣 NEW EVENT DETAILS! 🟣 "What can Positive Psychology offer Clinical Psychology?: Applying the science of wellbeing and flourishing to mental health care provision" The BPS Division of Clinical Psychology London and SE Branch welcomes you to sign up now for their upcoming event focused on Positive Psychology (PP). PP is the term used to refer to the scientific study of what makes life worth living and how we can cultivate well-being, happiness and flourishing in individuals, groups, organisations and communities. This emphasis in psychology was promoted by Martin Seligman in 1998 when he made this the theme for his presidency of the American Psychological Association. This approach contrasts with the dominant model used in addressing mental ill health which focuses on disorder and the alleviation of symptoms. In this webinar we look at an overview of the ethos, theories and evolution of PP and consider how these ideas might supplement traditional approaches to Clinical Psychology and mental health care. We consider research and snapshots of current practice that hope to inform how what we understand about humans at their best can support us when we are struggling. Join our free online Masterclass 10:00-11:00 on 29 Sept 2025, by the Institute of Health Promotion and Education (IHPE) and University of Nottingham, hosted by Prof Holly Blake FBPsS PFHEA, joined by Frank Coffey - Honorary Professor in Urgent and Emergency Care, Lucy Morris RN and Dr Emma Adams PhD FHEA MIHPE ➡️ In this session we will provide an overview of the unique role UEC settings can play in health promotion. ➡️ We will demonstrate the importance of embedding this in a whole-system,integrated approach to population health. ➡️ We will present findings from a national survey we undertook of healthcare workers’ attitudes towards promoting health in UEC settings and outline the barriers and enablers of health promotion practice as described by healthcare workers based in diverse UEC settings. ⭐ SBIRT is an ideal, though underused, approach in UEC settings for identifying patients with risk factors impacting on their health, providing immediate input during a ‘teachable moment’ and referring, where appropriate, to specialist services. ⭐ Alcohol misuse is a risk factor to health and wellbeing, very prevalent in UEC settings. ➡️ We developed and evaluated “Alcohol Prevention in Urgent and Emergency Care” (APUEC) online training for UEC healthcare workers. The aim was to increase positive attitudes, knowledge, confidence and skills related to SBIRT through the provision of (a) education on the impact of alcohol and the role of UEC staff in alcohol prevention, and (b) practical guidance on patient assessment, delivery of brief advice and referral decisions. We will discuss how this training was developed, how it was perceived by healthcare workers, and how skills learned can be applied in the clinical setting. 💡 We hope that such training may facilitate the integration of SBIRT into routine care, helping to reduce health inequalities, and contribute to population health improvement.
