You might have spotted York’s Neighbourhood Caretakers working near council owned housing off Clifton Backies and Hull Road this week to spruce up the area by cutting back overgrown vegetation, hedges and removing weeds. The dedicated team are working closely with residents, councillors, and volunteers to deliver visible improvements in local areas — from street cleaning to supporting biodiversity and climate resilience projects, to put pride back into our communities. Thank you to everyone in the community who helped to identify these areas

Congratulations to pupils and teachers from Yearsley Grove Primary School who joined Cllr Bob Webb and over 60 pupils from across York schools, to celebrate their achievements in promoting health and well-being through the Healthy Schools Award Programme. The event, funded by City of York Council, marked the growing success of the scheme, which now includes more than a third of York’s schools. The programme encourages schools to work towards bronze, silver, or gold status by meeting criteria across four key themes: Active Lives, Food in Schools, Emotional Health and Well-being, and Personal, Social and Health Education. During the celebration, pupils took part in interactive workshops and group discussions focused on oral health, mental well-being, physical activity and environmental sustainability. Activities included learning how to brush teeth properly, exploring the benefits of staying active and connecting with others, and understanding how recycling and reducing waste can help protect the planet. One highlight of the day was the presentation of a Bronze Award to Yearsley Grove Primary School for their work on the Active Lives theme. All schools in York and North Yorkshire are eligible to join the Healthy Schools Award Programme free of charge. Across the Swale, Ure, Nidd and Upper Ouse catchments, #Ousewem, led by City of York Council, and its partners are working to understand how land management and nature-based solutions can help slow and store water, supporting communities both locally and downstream. The York rivers trail, now in development, will tell this wider story - helping residents, visitors and businesses see how catchment-scale thinking connects with climate resilience and local action. 📖 Read how the trail is taking shape: https://lnkd.in/en9uc43S 🎥 Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/eTdVmz3y #FloodActionWeek #FCERMStrategy #FCRIP

We’re celebrating the impact of our amazing kinship carers during Kinship Care Week (6-12 October) , a national week of awareness, recognition and celebration of kinship families. Kinship care is when a child who cannot be raised by their parents lives with a relative or a close, connected adult, such as a friend or neighbour, instead of being placed into foster care or children’s home. In York, around 80 children and young people are cared for by kinship carers, providing them with a secure, loving home. Cllr Bob Webb, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “Kinship carers are part of York’s wider fostering family and provide an important role in giving children a loving home. I’d like to thank all our amazing kinship and foster carers for their tireless dedication and commitment to children and young people in York and would urge anyone who’s considering fostering in any form to get in touch.” To find out more about fostering, including Kinship Care, visit https://lnkd.in/dBSgrFQY
