For a fair and effective criminal justice system.
About us
The Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA) advocates for a fair and effective justice system. Our insight come from our members: over 200 non-profit organisations and academics with expertise across the UK justice system. We investigate key issues in criminal justice, co-produce evidence-led briefings and reports with our members to influence policy change. We connect practitioners, academics, the media, people with lived experience and policy makers from across the justice system to hold the government and other institutions to account and to promote power sharing. 🚨 There’s just a few days left to sign up for the Zahid Mubarek Trust’s conference: 'Race in prisons: learning from the past, shaping the future,' being held in London on the 28th October. The conference will serve as both a memorial for Zahid Mubarek on the 25th anniversary of his racist murder by his cellmate in YOI Feltham, as well as a participatory call to action to urgently address the continuing racial disparities that are persisting in the prison system decades on from Zahid’s murder. Featuring a keynote address from Lord James Timpson OBE, Minister of State for Prisons, Parole and Probation, as well as senior prison leaders, policymakers, researchers, and people with lived experience, this event is not to be missed. Zahid Mubarek Trust will launch a Manifesto on Race Equality in Prisons, alongside a grassroots movement to drive accountability for racial disparities across the prison system. They particularly welcome families of those in prison, and people with lived experience of imprisonment to attend. 📝 Find out more and sign up by the 12th October: https://lnkd.in/gi6D4E5p

🎬 Watch 'What Do You Think?', a powerful film created by Revolving Doors and Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research (ICPR) with Media Trust. The film highlights the role of co-produced research in creating a fairer, more effective criminal justice system. At the centre of the film is a simple message: people with lived experience of the criminal justice system must not only be heard, they should play an active role in shaping the research, policy and reform processes that affect them. Last year, we partnered with Media Trust to offer ten of our members the unique opportunity to create short films to highlight systemic challenges and advocate for transformative change. We're so proud of the resulting films! 🍿 Watch What Do You Think? and the rest of the films produced as part of the project: https://lnkd.in/equ9PDeB

📣 Unlock the vote - Over 80,000 people in prison across England and Wales are currently denied the right to vote. We're proud to support Unlock - for people with criminal records' important new campaign to change this. Why this matters: 🗳️ Democracy is a fundamental right, not a privilege earned through conduct ⚖️ The Lammy Review showed minoritised communities are overrepresented in prison. Removing their vote compounds existing injustice 🌍 We're out of step: Scotland and many European neighbours already extend voting rights to those in prison 1 in 4 of us has a criminal record. When we silence people in prison, we cut them off from decisions affecting their families and communities. It's time to unlock the vote. 📣 Read CJA Trustee Dr Thomas McNeil's latest working paper, written for Centre for Crime and Justice Studies. The paper reflects on the key challenges to organisational change and cultural reform in policing, drawing on Dr McNeil's experience as West Midlands Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner from 2021-2024 and aims to contribute to the thinking around policing and effective alternatives to custody at a time of considerable national reflection on the justice system. Outlining 11 policy recommendations for implementing a more effective programme of community rehabilitation, this is a must-read for those interested in police reform. https://lnkd.in/ezjxw5Uc

👏 The CJA is proud to support the Right to be Heard Campaign. Why me? UK are partnering with the Common Ground Justice Project and Jacob Dunne to campaign for a legal right for victims of crime to be able to explore Restorative Justice. They are proposing an amendment to the Victims and Courts Bill, which will give victims of crime the legal right to be given information on Restorative Justice, and be referred to a Restorative Justice service. Every victim of crime deserves the right to be heard. But right now, many are left unable to have their say or get their questions answered. This needs to change. 📝 Find out more about the campaign and sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/eRq2TUsX

Today, the Women’s Justice Reimagined partnership launches a vital briefing setting out our advice to the Women’s Justice Board on the urgent steps needed to address racial disproportionality in the criminal justice system for women. Written in collaboration between the Criminal Justice Alliance, Hibiscus Initiatives, Women in Prison, Agenda Alliance, Zahid Mubarek Trust and #MuslimWomenInPrison, the briefing builds on recommendations made in the recent meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Women Affected by the Criminal Justice System. We call on the Women’s Justice Board, Ministry of Justice UK and HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) to: ✅ Meaningfully consult and learn from women with lived experience in the development of all policy and legislation, including the current Sentencing Bill ✅ Embed anti-racist practices in their work ✅ End the criminalisation of victim/survivors of VAWG, modern slavery, and human trafficking and the further harm caused to them by the criminal justice system ✅ Improve data and evidence by disaggregating by gender and ethnicity/race with the aim of reducing the disproportionate impact of the CJS on those from marginalised groups ✅ Sustainably fund women’s specialist services “When you encounter the criminal justice system, you feel ashamed by your race and colour because you are never taken seriously. That leads to isolation, resentment, and guilt.” - Millicent, a woman with lived experience. Read and share the briefing to show your support: https://lnkd.in/eE2vJY-d
