Clean Break Theatre Company

Non-profit Organization Management

A women’s theatre company changing lives and changing minds – on stage, in prison and in the community.

About us

Clean Break is a women’s theatre company, founded in 1979 by two women prisoners who believed in the power of theatre to transform lives. Our vision is of a society where women can realise their full potential, free from criminalisation. We pursue this vision by producing ground-breaking theatre which puts women’s voices at its heart and creates lasting change by challenging injustice in and beyond the criminal justice system. Through theatre workshops and projects in prisons and the community which build confidence, resilience and wellbeing, we transform the lives of women who have experienced the criminal justice system or have been identified as at risk of entering it.

We are building something bold: a collective of women and organisations working side by side to end the unjust, unsafe and unfair use of remand against women in the UK. We need a leader who is not only strategic and organised, but also deeply committed to the power of lived experience, coproduction, and intersectional feminist principles. • Celebrating Eddy Queens The Clean Break community is heartbroken and devastated by the passing of the vibrant, talented powerhouse, Eddy Queens. Eddy joined Clean Break in 2009, and was an integral part of our company for over 15 years. She was the embodiment of Clean Break's values, believing so deeply in the power of art to transform women's lives, because she herself had lived it. She used her own life experiences and her creative voice to make a profound difference for countless women. As an artist, as part of Nubian CoheARTs, she shared the message that women need not be defined by the challenges they have faced, and that creativity can be a way forward. As a fierce advocate, she committed herself to personally supporting women through their own recoveries. It is hard to imagine Clean Break's walls without Eddy's infectious laughter bouncing around them. But it is safe to say, the impact of her energy and brilliance is so great that it will continue to be felt by everyone who walks through our doors. We send our love and deepest sympathies to Eddy's family, friends and everyone who is impacted by her passing. In the next few weeks, we will be holding a gathering for Clean Break community members. If you would like to attend, please get in touch at [email protected] and we will share the details with you. Photo: Eddy Queens in Through This Mist, Clean Break, by Helen Murray

🚨BREAKING NEWS: Today, new Sentencing Council guidelines that we fought for have finally come into effect! They acknowledge that prison is high-risk for pregnant women and tell courts to avoid sending women there! Critically, they also feature new case law that Level Up helped create when we directly supported two pregnant women’s sentence appeals in 2024. THIS IS HUGE! It’s a moment to celebrate, and the result of years of relentless protests, lobbying, and media stories. Now, we need to make sure that the government goes even further and legislates to end the imprisonment of pregnant women and mothers. There is widespread consensus that prison is no place for pregnant women – from the Royal College of Midwives to the Sentencing Council – and earlier this year, the Independent Sentencing Review also confirmed the harms of imprisoning pregnant women and recommended community-based alternatives, and long-term funding for women’s centres. Without legislation, judges can still choose to send pregnant women to prison – and the harm is simply too great to leave that to chance. As long as prisons remain a ‘last resort’, they remain open and they will be filled. https://lnkd.in/dKviDVPZ
