  • New preclinical research explores the mechanisms behind CBD's potential in animal models of addiction 🌱 A recent study in Biological Psychiatry investigated how cannabidiol (CBD) from cannabis may affect heroin seeking behaviour in rats. Key findings in this animal model: ➡️ CBD was shown to reduce cue-induced heroin seeking in rats following abstinence. ➡️ The analysis suggested that CBD modulated gene networks in the brain's Nucleus Accumbens Shell, an area associated with drug seeking. This is an important step forward in understanding the neurobiological pathways that CBD could potentially influence in the context of addiction research. While more research is needed, especially in human trials - this study lays the groundwork for further exploration in the setting of addiction 🔗 Read the full summary by Dr Simon Erridge: https://lnkd.in/epiYAByN

  • A small but meaningful step forward for patients in Spain 🇪🇸 Today, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a long-awaited Royal Decree regulating the medicinal use of cannabis in standardised preparations. It’s encouraging to see progress toward a framework that recognises the therapeutic potential of cannabis when other medicines have been insufficient— and to see an emphasis on evidence-based prescribing and pharmaceutical quality. However, while this marks a positive shift, access remains highly limited: prescriptions can only be made by hospital-based specialists, and products must be prepared and dispensed exclusively in hospital pharmacies. We hope to see future evolutions of the current regulatory framework, where patient access to medical cannabis is eased and additional pharmaceutical forms are incorporated into the pool of available therapeutic tools for doctors. • How do caffeine and CBD change the effects of THC? ☕🌱 With cannabinoid containing food products on the rise, the combination of THC, CBD, and caffeine is becoming common, but the interaction effects remain largely unclear. A new randomised controlled trial published in Neuropsychopharmacology explored the effects of combining oral THC with caffeine and/or CBD in healthy adults. The key findings 🌱 ➡️ Caffeine had minimal impact on THC’s effects, including the “euphoria perceived driving impairment, or metabolism. ➡️ CBD, however, significantly altered THC’s effects - increasing both subjective euphoria and impairment on psychomotor tasks. ➡️ CBD also increased blood concentrations of THC, potentially boosting its potency when taken together. This is the first human study to directly assess how THC, CBD, and caffeine interact when consumed orally, highlighting the importance of understanding the entire cannabinoid profile in commercial products. This, however, is just one study considering only a single dose of THC, CBD, and caffeine respectively. More research is needed to fully understand the implications across a range of doses of all three compounds. Yet, this study does raise important considerations for both consumers and regulators navigating the rapidly evolving cannabis product market.
