Ahead of #INHSU2025, we visited partners across South Africa who are transforming the HIV response for people who use drugs. From Soweto to Cape Town, we saw how compassion, innovation, and community leadership are tackling stigma, advancing harm reduction, and ensuring no one is left behind in the fight to end AIDS. Here’s a snapshot at what we’ve been up to 👇 🔸 In Soweto, We spent the day exploring OUT LGBT's innovative model supporting LGBTQ+ communities who use drugs. With Foundation funding, they’re piloting a holistic model that helps people stay on HIV treatment, improves mental health, and creates safe spaces for connection, skills training, and employment opportunity. 🔸We were also privileged to visit the impressive COSUP program in Tshwane, one of the only government-funded harm reduction programs in South Africa which is reaching thousands of people who use drugs across the city with lifesaving health services. 🔸In Cape Town, we visited TB HIV Care's outreach services for people who inject drugs in the city. Our partnership seeks to give people who use drugs a greater voice in South Africa, enabling the community to advocate for fairer laws, better services, and policies that move away from punitive drug approaches and toward health and dignity. 🔸We also spent time with our partner SANPUD. Through a grant from the Foundation, they're improving support for pregnant women who use drugs by training healthcare workers and clinicians on harm reduction and substance use, ensuring women can access non-judgmental HIV care. We visited some of this amazing work which has made a real difference to mothers and their newborns in rural parts of the Western Cape. Together, these partners and programs are proving what’s possible when we put health, humanity, and hope at the centre of the HIV response. Today is National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day – an important moment for us to raise awareness of the health inequalities faced by Hispanic/Latinx people living with or at risk of HIV in the United States. Behind these statistics are real people – families, friends and communities navigating systemic barriers that make health equity harder to achieve. Together with our partners in the U.S., we’re working to: ✅ Expand access to HIV testing, prevention and care ✅ Dismantle stigma through community-led outreach ✅ Strengthen policies to reduce barriers to lifesaving healthcare #NLAAD 📸 Photos 1 and 3: Cubby Graham 📸 Photo 2: Sean Black

Mental health is one of the biggest contributors to poor health and disability worldwide. For people living with HIV and TB, the challenge is even greater: they are two to three times more likely to experience depression and other mental health conditions, which can make it harder to stay on treatment and maintain good health. That’s why we invested $500,000 in a partnership with United for Global Mental Health to integrate mental health care into major HIV funding initiatives. Sexual health testing is up, PrEP access is increasing, and treatment coverage is strong. But young people aged 15 to 24 are testing less, and heterosexual people at heightened risk continue to face unequal access to HIV prevention. The UK government has an opportunity to make the upcoming HIV Action Plan a turning point, one that shows the bold ambition and decisive action needed to pass the historic threshold of ending new cases. https://lnkd.in/exyXyVUG Anne Aslett Department of Health and Social Care The Rt.
