While #cocoa prices have become more stable in recent months, there are still several factors that could affect it. Policies put forward in Côte d'Ivoire’s upcoming presidential election, such as new farmgate prices, may have an impact, explains cocoa consultant Ousmane Attai Ouedraogo. The eventual #cocoaharvest, which is now in full swing, is bound to have a significant impact on prices as well. Meanwhile, some companies are seeing more success in dealing with the crisis than others, explains Julia Buech from Rabobank. Larger companies are taking advantage of financial tools to survive, while brand narrative is pulling some smaller players through. Furthermore, while mass market chocolate declines, #premium is seeing resilience.

It is well known that #palmoil is found in a wide range of supermarket products. The most common figure, used by organisations like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), is 50%. A new study suggests that this is wrong. Looking at supermarkets in Europe and Australia, it found that palm oil is only listed in 8% of products. Even when unidentified oils and palm oil-linked chemicals are taken into account, the number only reaches 40%. So, what does this mean for #alternativematerials? The demand is still high for alternative oils, explains Ben W. of Sun Bear Biofuture, which creates palm oil alternatives from fermentation.

The European Commission has updated its proposal on delaying the #EUDR. On the one hand, the delay will now only affect smaller operators and traders, who will have an extra six months to prepare (although larger operators will have a six-month "grace period" where for non-compliance). On the other, downstream operators will no longer be required to submit due diligence statements, meaning that only the operator putting a commodity in the market will have to do this. These changes, while yet to go through Parliament, mark a substantial transformation of the EUDR.
