𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗗𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲, 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗛𝗦. True strength is shown not only in survival, but in leadership. As we mark Black History Month and its theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, we honour pioneers who broke barriers in health and wellbeing. 🩺 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗗𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲 Daphne Steele (1927–2004) made history in 1964 as the UK’s first Black matron, leading St. Winifred’s Hospital in Ilkley. Her appointment marked a pivotal moment in NHS history, a step towards the diverse, inclusive workforce we see today. Born in Guyana, Steele trained as a nurse in the UK and rose through the NHS with compassion, professionalism, and determination. She is remembered as a true pioneer who broke barriers, challenged prejudice, and paved the way for future generations of healthcare leaders. Her story reminds us that health and wellbeing is about more than treatment, it is about equity, dignity and trust. At Get Set UK, our health and wellbeing services reflect this same commitment: working alongside communities to ensure people feel supported, respected, and able to move forward in life. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸. When Julius Sukai, aged 20 joined our Skills for Work programme, funded by the Adult Skills Fund (ASF), he had been unemployed for over a year. His confidence was low, he felt unsure of his future and overwhelmed by the number of career choices in front of him. Discussing his opportunities with his employment advisor, he enrolled on 7-day CSCS Construction course at our Camberwell office, but was hesitant as he “wanted a job, not just another course”. Course Tutor Mark Phoenix (Published Author) rang Julius the day before the course started where Julian confessed, he was contemplating not attending. Mark explained that Skills for Work courses are about more than gaining skills and qualifications, they’re about inspiring and motivating people to move forward. During the course, Julius’ mindset completely shifted. He learned about the construction industry, explored different roles, and began to see a clear path forward. By the end of the week, Julius was no longer just interested in finding work, he was committed to building a career and looking to approach Balfour Beatty for a role as a site operative. ▶️Hear Julius share his experience below.
