About us
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

This week at GOSH, we’re celebrating both International Adolescent Healthcare Week and Play in Healthcare Week, and we’re proud to spotlight an innovative project which supports our adolescent patients’ mental health through play. Our GOSH Play Team partnered with Play Well For Life to pilot Dragons of Afterlands – an augmented reality board game co-created with young people and psychologists. This evidence-based tool helped staff connect meaningfully with our adolescent patients and support their mental health whilst here at GOSH. 🕹️ Following a successful pilot, a second phase is in the works to expand access to all our patients! Learn more about Dragons of Afterlands below. 👇 We’re thrilled that this work has also been shortlisted for the HSJ Awards 2025! A huge well done to everyone involved – and good luck to the team at the event ceremony in November! 👏 🎉 Claire Koenig Dr Sarah Campbell #AdolescentHealth #PlayInHealthcare #InnovationInCare #GOSH #HSJawards #MentalHealth #YouthVoice #PatientExperience

We’re pleased to share the results of a major international study led by GOSH, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, and UCLA, which has shown that gene therapy for the rare immune condition ADA-SCID is not only effective but safe in the long term. 💡 ADA-SCID is a life-threatening condition that leaves children without a functioning immune system. It is caused by mutations in the gene that creates the essential enzyme, adenosine deaminase. This study followed 62 children over an average of 7.5 years — the largest cohort of its kind — and found: ✅ 100% survival rate ✅ 95% of children cured ✅ No serious complications One of those children is Andy, who was diagnosed at just 3 weeks old. Thanks to the gene therapy trial at GOSH, Andy is now 9 years old, thriving, and full of energy — even boxing with his local club in Ireland! This work is testament to the dedication of researchers, clinicians, and families, and it paves the way for future access to life-changing treatments for rare diseases. 📢 GOSH is now exploring becoming the first UK hospital to hold a market authorisation for this therapy — a huge step toward making these treatments more accessible. Thank you to all the partners, including NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, LifeArc and Orchard Therapeutics - U.S. Read more on the GOSH website: https://lnkd.in/eRn-Pf2a [Image descriptions: four photos of Andy, ranging in age from a young baby in hospital with GOSH staff, through to 9 years old, getting ready at home for boxing club, dressed smartly in a suit, and a family portrait alongside his parents and three siblings.]

The LEGO® MRI Scanner set is making a meaningful difference in paediatric care by reducing anxiety and the need for sedation during MRI procedures. Designed by the LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation, the set includes a scanner, patient bed, waiting room, scanning room, staff figures, and medical accessories—all crafted to help children understand MRI scans through the power of play. MRI scans are a vital tool in children's healthcare because they don’t use radiation. But for many young patients, the experience can be intimidating—lying still inside a noisy machine for long periods often leads to sedation or general anaesthesia. Through role play and storytelling, the LEGO MRI Scanner allows hospital staff can take a more child-centred, playful approach to preparing children for their scans. The research also showed that 95% of healthcare professionals using the set say it improves the family’s hospital experience, while 94% find it fun and engaging for children. Emily Stone, Senior Play Specialist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), shared: “The Play Team at GOSH use the LEGO MRIs across the hospital and have found them to be a brilliant way to build rapport quickly with a child, and help them prepare for what comes next. Everyone knows and loves LEGO, so when I walk into a child's room with it, it instantly makes them feel at ease. MRIs can be anxiety-inducing, and it's so helpful to be able to show children exactly what will happen and give them an 'inside look' into how an MRI works, as well as giving us an opportunity to describe the noise, which can often be one of the most intimidating parts of having this procedure. We're so grateful to LEGO for donating these to us, and look forward to continuing to use them with our patients to make what can be a stressful and worrying time, that little bit easier.” Learn more about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/eJx-GHxN #Play #PlayInHealthcare #LEGO #LearningThroughPlay The LEGO Foundation the LEGO Group [Image description: A birds eye view of the LEGO set, which features a scanner, patient bed, waiting room, scanning room, staff figures and medical accessories.]

This week marks International Adolescent Health Week, with the theme “Thriving Inside and Out: Strengthening Adolescent Physical and Mental Health.” It’s a timely reminder that adolescence is more than a stage between childhood and adulthood - it’s a unique and vital period of growth where health, independence, and confidence are shaped for life. ⭐ At GOSH, we know that caring for young people isn’t just about treating medical conditions. It’s about helping them prepare to live well, both physically and mentally, beyond our hospital walls. Many of our patients now survive into adulthood thanks to pioneering treatments developed here at GOSH. 🔬The next step is making sure they have the skills, knowledge, and support to thrive as they move on from paediatric to adult services. Cillian Gray, Healthcare Transition and Adolescent Lead, shares with us why adolescent health matters at GOSH, the work we’re doing to empower our young people and our goals for the future to ensure that every young person thrives, inside and out. 👇

🏃♀️💙 Congratulations to all the runners who took part in this weekend’s RBC Race for the Kids – especially our incredible team from Fox Ward! 💙🏃♂️ This Saturday, 10 amazing healthcare assistants and nurses from Fox Ward laced up their trainers for their very first RBC Race for the Kids – and they've already raised over £1300 for GOSH Charity to help beat childhood cancer. 💬 “Working together in a small team on the ward means we’ve met some of the most amazing patients and families who are often with us for a very long stay – so we get to know them really well. We also see how families are supported by so many different teams at GOSH throughout their journey, and the impact of that is incredible.” The team are running to support the future Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH. They say "The cancer centre is important because it would bring bigger and better facilities to the families that have GOSH as a second home. It will also improve the facilities for the nursing and medical teams who care for them. The difference it could make is huge. Families will have updated patient cubicles better suited to their needs, updated kitchen and laundry facilities will also have a positive impact to families stays." 💛 Drop a ❤️ in the comments to wish the Fox Ward team and all of #TeamGOSH a massive good luck for Saturday! #RBCRacefortheKids #TeamGOSH #GOSHCharity #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #GOSH [Image description: Meet the team: Elliora, Lily, Evie, Emily, Jessica and Christine are all smiling and wearing their blue GOSH RBC Race for the Kids branded t-shirts. Combining expertise to tackle fragmentation in health and care data 🌐 We have signed an agreement with the Kent, Medway and Sussex Secure Data Environment (KMS SDE) to improve how health and care data is used for research. Currently, data is often stored in separate systems, making it difficult to get a complete view of a person’s care. This partnership aims to create a more connected, secure and efficient way to use data, accelerating research and innovation. The agreement outlines a shared goal to integrate high-quality research data into the Secure Data Environment network, enabling approved researchers to securely access and analyse de-identified data. The collaboration with combine our strengths in digital innovation and research with KMS SDE’s leading governance and technology. Together, we’ll develop a blueprint for how specialist data environments can collaborate with the SDE network to deliver joined-up insights that benefit patients, researchers and the wider system, laying the foundation for future partnerships. Shiren Patel, Head of Innovation Technology and Data Research at Great Ormond Street Hospital DRIVE unit said: “At GOSH, we’re committed to excellence, not just in care, but also in how we manage and use data. By working with KMS SDE, one of the most advanced regional data environments, we can refine our governance model, build a gold-standard framework that others can follow and ensure we remain at the forefront of trusted, high-impact health research.”
