How long should it really take to fill a role? Last week, we asked our network what they believe is the right “time to fill” from launching a search to a candidate signing their contract. Here’s how 279 people voted: ▪️ 30 days – 49% ▪️40 days – 28% ▪️50 days – 16% ▪️70 days – 6% What stood out to us was the difference in perspective between groups. The majority of those who selected 30–40 days were candidates, keen to move quickly and secure their next opportunity. Those selecting 50–70 days tended to be clients or board members, recognising the complexity of internal approvals, multiple interview stages, and comparison across candidates. This contrast highlights one of the key challenges in recruitment, balancing momentum with due diligence. Candidates are motivated to move quickly, while clients often need time to ensure alignment on skills, culture, and long-term fit. The recruiter’s role sits right in the middle, maintaining pace, managing expectations, and keeping both sides aligned so the best candidate doesn’t get lost in the process. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for improving hiring efficiency without compromising quality.
