Building bridges between space communities, from Harwell to Japan. 🌉🎌 It's been almost a year since Harwell Campus and Japan’s CROSS-U signed a landmark agreement to strengthen ties between the UK and Japan’s space sectors and this connection continues to grow. Next Tuesday, Dr Hugh Mortimer (the Harwell Space Cluster Lead, Associate Director at STFC, and a senior research scientist at RAL Space) takes to the stage at NIHONBASHI SPACE WEEK. The session will explore how the UK’s Industrial Strategy and international partnerships are opening new doors for global innovation in space science and technology. Partnerships like this are what turn ideas into shared progress. #harwellcampus #nihonbashispaceweek #spacesector #internationalcollaboration #ukjapan #innovationhub

The UK's leading science and innovation campus.
About us
Harwell is the UK’s leading science and innovation campus – a unique community of leading scientists, engineers and innovators working together to solve the critical problems facing our planet. Over 7,000 people work in more than 250 organisations at Harwell and these numbers will continue to grow. Our collective goal is to make Harwell the world’s largest and most important location for scientific research, technological development and commercialisation. We are finding solutions for the big challenges of the future including the impact of ageing and growing populations, climate change and sustainability, space exploration and satellite communications, energy technology and storage. We focus on accelerating science and technology breakthroughs to improve the human condition. Harwell is a crossroads where public, private, academic and commercial organisations meet and work together to address these global challenges. Start-ups, SMEs and multinationals choose to be located at Harwell where they have access to open access research facilities (the UK's National Laboratories) and where major investment opportunities exist. Over 30 university teams from across the world are on Campus at any one time. Cross sector collaboration combined with the cross fertilisation of talent, ideas and solutions are at the core of our open, collaborative environment. Harwell has been leading world-changing scientific breakthroughs for almost 80 years and is currently managed under a private/ public partnership focused on the development of the Campus and its unique ecosystem.

From spacecraft cameras to the world’s largest radio observatory, RAL Space is shaping how we explore and understand our universe. And last week, Harwell members got a glimpse behind the scenes. Campus members were treated to a fascinating insight into six of RAL Space's project teams, plus a tour of some of their cutting-edge labs and testing chambers. From the electronics behind NASA’s PUNCH mission and the development of the SCOPE instrument, to contributions to ESA’s AERIAL mission and the use of data to detect solar panel faults, the breadth of innovation was truly impressive. One of the standout projects came from the Astrophysics team: the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). An international effort to build the world’s largest radio observatory, set to become the biggest scientific facility in history. Featuring 197 radio dishes in Southern Africa and 130,000 antennas in Western Australia, it’s due to be operational by 2029 and capable of handling 30 terabits of data per second. If you’re keen for more behind-the-scenes insights from campus organisations, head to our website to see who’s hosting the next Harwell Connect and secure your place. #harwellcampus #campuslife #networking #makingconnections #innovation #research #spacediscovery #spacemissions #behindthescenes

At Harwell, we know that innovation starts with people. And that means creating spaces where everyone can do their best work. That’s why we’ve been applying ARC | Advanced Research Clusters research into neuroinclusive design, developed in partnership with HOK and University of the West of Scotland, to help shape more inclusive and accessible workplaces across campus. When Lumen was refurbished, these learnings guided everything from layout and lighting to natural materials and breakout zones, creating an environment that feels comfortable, inclusive and welcoming for everyone. Because when workspaces are designed with every mind in mind, great ideas follow. Hear from ARC’s Development Director, Jenny Gardner on why designing workspaces for every mind matters: https://lnkd.in/enzvXgQe #harwellcampus #inclusiveinnovation #neurodiversity #scienceandinnovation #workspacedesign
