At Hull College, we’re committed to providing our students with industry-led learning experiences that inspire creativity and prepare them for successful careers in the performing arts. Yesterday, our Dance and Performing Arts students - including three Year 11s from 14+ College - took part in an industry workshop with professional dancer Sophia Kato, who brought her wealth of experience from training at the Northern Ballet Academy and studying choreography at Leeds Beckett University. Through a powerful contemporary ballet session, Sophia encouraged students to explore storytelling through movement, combining classical technique with contemporary innovation. Reflecting on the session, Sophia said: “I had an amazing workshop with the students - it was such a joy to help them explore and understand the process of contemporary dance, particularly floor work. We were delighted to welcome former student Abigail Watkins back to our Queen’s Gardens campus recently for a Natural Dyeing Workshop with our Fashion students. Abigail delivered a highly engaging and hands-on session exploring immersion dyeing, eco-printing, and Hapa Zome (hammer printing) - giving students the opportunity to develop new creative skills while learning about sustainable and natural textile processes. It was a fantastic opportunity for our learners to gain valuable industry insight and be inspired by an alumni who is now successfully forging her own creative path in the fashion industry. We’re incredibly proud of our staff and students who organised and took part in a ‘Dance Through the Decades’ fundraising event yesterday in support of Chasing Rainbows as part of Baby Loss Awareness Week. 💙💗 Their energy, creativity, and compassion shone through as they danced their way from the 1960s to today - all to raise money and awareness for an important cause supporting families affected by baby loss. 𝗪𝗘’𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗥𝗦! 🥳 A remarkable partnership between Hull College, Smith+Nephew, Think Mental Health Ltd, and Think Cloud has officially achieved a new 𝗚𝗨𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗦™ title for the most users in a mental health awareness video lesson. Set on World Mental Health Day last week, the record-breaking online session brought together 916 verified participants - and over 1,400 people involved at one point - from across the UK and around the world, including participants from Europe, North America, Asia, and beyond.
