Thank you, Dil Sidhu, for sharing your knowledge on the SIT Framework at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge today 👇
Problem Solving with Systematic Inventive Thinking - Thinking INSIDE the Box We often hear that innovation means thinking outside the box, but what if the real breakthroughs come from looking inside it? At Friday Buns this week, Dil Sidhu, Business Development and Programme Director at IfM Engage, introduced us to Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT) - an innovation method that thrives on constraints, not freedom. Unlike traditional brainstorming, SIT uses structured thinking patterns to spark creative, workable ideas: Subtraction – What happens if we remove something? Division – What if we split and rearrange parts? Multiplication – What if one element had a modified twin? Task Unification – What else could this existing thing do? Attribute Dependency – What if variables changed together? It’s an approach that’s helped organisations like Mars, Shell, Kraft, and Merck, and it resonates with engineers and innovators because it’s structured, teachable, and produces solutions that are both original and achievable. From Apollo 13’s makeshift air filter to Nespresso’s clever redesign of coffee making, SIT reminds us that innovation doesn’t always mean more — sometimes, it means less. Friday Buns is a weekly term-time talk series at the IfM featuring inspiring insights from alumni, staff, students, and visitors, followed by buns and cake in the common room to encourage discussion. #FridayBuns #Innovation #SystematicInventiveThinking #Engineering #LearningAndDevelopment #InsideTheBox

👉 Women currently make up 28.4% of the UK manufacturing workforce - a record high, but still well below gender parity. With almost a quarter of the sector’s workforce expected to retire within the next decade, there is an urgent need to attract and retain diverse talent to secure the future of UK manufacturing. The Women in Manufacturing UK initiative (WiM UK) is driving change with a bold ambition: to increase women’s representation in manufacturing to 35% by 2035. Established in 2022, the initiative focuses on inspiring more women into manufacturing careers, supporting leadership development, building networks, and shaping policy to create more inclusive workplaces. IfM Engage, on behalf of the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge, plays a central role in this initiative by: 🔹 convening the Industrial Advisory Board 🔹 writing the annual Women in Manufacturing UK Report 🔹 managing the annual conference 🔹 coordinating the Policy Research Working Group 🔹 supporting the initiative’s branding and communications WiM UK is also supported by other founding organisations including the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and Innovate UK Business Connect. 📅 The WiM UK Annual Conference will take place online on 23 October - bringing together industry leaders, policymakers and professionals to share insights, build partnerships and drive change. 👉 Find out more about the initiative and book your place for the conference: https://lnkd.in/edyZpC_Y Kate Willsher, Jennifer Castañeda Navarrete, Ella Whellams, Elizabeth Tofaris, Kimberley Lewis, Harriet Riley, David Lott, Alison Martin, Anna Rowntree, Cambridge Industrial Innovation Policy #WiM25 #WiMWednesday #WomeninManufacturing

Today we are celebrating Ada Lovelace Day at the IfM – an international day recognising the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and inspiring the next generation of pioneers. This morning, Kate Willsher and Jennifer Castañeda Navarrete visited the Houses of Parliament to represent Women in Manufacturing (WiM UK) at the Ada Lovelace Day Breakfast Reception, which addressed the underrepresentation of women in the manufacturing sector. Hosted by Jodie Gosling of Parliament for Nuneaton, and supported by Lloyds Banking Group and the MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre, the event brought together MPs, educators, businesses and organisations committed to raising awareness and providing STEM skills training, with the shared goal of encouraging more women to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering. As founding members of WiM UK, Kate and Jennifer used the opportunity to discuss the findings of the upcoming 2025 Women in Manufacturing Report and share actionable steps that leaders can take to support progress towards the Government’s Industrial Strategy ‘35 by 35’ vision — targeting 35% female representation in manufacturing by 2035. WiM UK has shaped this national ambition through research, partnerships, and advisory work that provide evidence, insight, and practical pathways for change. The Women in Manufacturing report will be launched on 23 October at the annual Women in Manufacturing conference. There are still places to attend online and be among the first to hear the report’s findings. See the link in the comments to register. On World Mental Health Day, we are proud to announce a new project, ‘Accelerating and de-risking implementation of digital mental health innovations for young people’. Part of over £1.5 million awarded to 17 innovative health technology projects by NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), IfM Engage are working with YPMH: The Foundation For Young People's Mental Health to determine whether a structured process can help schools and healthcare providers to successfully adopt new tools. Studies show that even effective tools can fail to become part of routine NHS practice, and schools frequently lack the change management methods and capabilities to implement digital innovations. The project will put research into practice, testing an implementation methodology developed by IfM Engage and YPMH. The aim is to improve young people’s access to timely support, streamline their experience across services and contribute to broader systems change. A fantastic and productive session. It was a privilege for IfM Engage to support Essent and E.ON in facilitating this workshop. Bringing together such a dedicated group of partners from across the value chain is the critical first step. The energy and commitment to turning the eight identified opportunities into real-world projects is inspiring. We look forward to the next steps!
🌍 Working Together for a Circular Future At Essent we’re taking concrete steps toward our circular ambitions. In collaboration with E.ON Group Innovation and the University of Cambridge, we’re exploring how to improve circularity in our B2C heating systems – including heat pumps, gas boilers and insulation materials. 🔄 Last Friday, we hosted an international and inspiring workshop that brought together nearly 30 partners from across the value chain – from OEMs and refurbishers to waste processors and service partners. Participants included Intergas Verwarming B.V., Vaillant Group, Remeha @Bosch, Renewi, PreZero Nederland, @Stichting Open, Inexion @Energiewacht, @EENS and @Refurn. We focused on two key themes: 🔁 Refurbishment and reuse of components – How can we refurbish more systems and build trust through clear guarantees and traceability? ♻️ End-of-life strategies – How can we increase the share of recycled materials and make data flows smarter and more efficient? 💡 The open discussions led to valuable insights and eight concrete opportunities to develop together. Because true circularity can only be achieved through collaboration, transparency and trust across the entire chain. 🙏 Thank you to all participants for your engagement, expertise and enthusiasm. Together, we’re building a more sustainable energy system. 🔗 Want to learn more about our circular approach?
