MGM’s sudden withdrawal has left the New York casino race down to three, but far from settled. 🎰 Bally’s Bronx, Resorts World NYC, and Metropolitan Park are now the final contenders for the state’s three downstate licences following MGM’s surprise exit this week. 💸 MGM Resorts International cited shrinking returns, competition concerns, and a shorter-than-expected 15-year licence term for walking away from its $2.3 billion Empire City expansion. Its departure follows exits by Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands Corp., both citing political and market uncertainty. 🏗️ The remaining bids range from $4 to $8 billion in projected costs and each face questions over financing, zoning, and construction timelines as New York’s Gaming Facility Location Board moves toward its 1 December recommendation deadline. 👉 Link to full analysis from Jess Marquez in the comments below.

⚖️ ECJ orders probe into Dutch lottery monopolies after rejecting Netherlands’ appeal The European Court of Justice has rejected the Netherlands’ appeal in a long-running dispute over how the country awarded its lottery monopoly licences, ruling that the European Commission must now investigate the process. 📜 The case dates back to 2016, when the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) complained that the Netherlands renewed monopoly licences for incumbent lotteries without an open tender, potentially breaching EU state aid rules. ⚖️ A 2023 General Court decision found the EC failed to properly assess whether licence extensions provided unlawful advantages, including indirect benefits to charities funded by lottery proceeds. The ECJ has now upheld that judgment in full. 💬 EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer welcomed the ruling as “a clear victory for the proper enforcement of EU law”, adding that member states must ensure fair and competitive licensing procedures. 📱 Full story by Kyle Goldsmith on our website
