Safer and Cleaner Shipping

About us

Dedicated to safe ships and clean seas, IACS makes a unique contribution to maritime safety and regulation through technical support, compliance verification and research and development. More than 90% of the world's cargo carrying tonnage is covered by the classification design, construction and through-life compliance rules and standards set by the twelve Member Societies of IACS. IACS is a not for profit membership organisation of classification societies that establish minimum technical standards and requirements that address maritime safety and environmental protection and ensures their consistent application. It carries out this responsibility through its panels, expert groups and project teams and provides a Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS) that its Members comply with, as an assurance of professional integrity and maintenance of high professional standards. IACS is recognized as the principal technical advisor of IMO.

🇮🇹 Last week, newcleo welcomed the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) to our Turin headquarters, Villa Chiuminatto, for a seminar on the regulation and classification of nuclear applications at sea. 💡 We believe that early engagement with key stakeholders is vital to enable the safe deployment of nuclear-powered assets. Our team shared insights into newcleo’s vision, our R&D on Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) technology and MOX fuel, and the opportunities nuclear innovation can bring to shipping and offshore activities. 🙌 A warm thank you to all participants, both in person and remote, and especially to Mr. Roberto Cazzulo, Chairman of IACS, for making this seminar possible and for his inspiring contribution.   We look forward to building on this exchange as the start of a lasting cooperation.   Roberto Cazzulo (IACS), Jez Sims (LR), Federico P. IACS has published Recommendation 192: Guidelines to Address Human Element Issues, a framework designed to integrate human-centred thinking into the development of technical requirements. Putting people at the centre of our thinking is an important objective of IACS. Rec.192 recognises the core strengths that a person brings to the shipping ecosystem i.e. human decision-making, a sense of purpose and action, as well as the challenges that exist at the human/machine interface. IACS guidelines, therefore seek to provide practical guidance on how to assess workload, decision-making, working environment, and training needs in order to realise the benefits of properly integrating human interaction into increasingly complex ships’ systems. The objective is to embed human factors into safety from the very start, ensuring more resilient, effective, and sustainable outcomes across the maritime sector. 🔗 Read the full recommendation here: https://lnkd.in/ghsK8u9e #ShipsandShipping #MaritimeSafety #humanelement

Thanks Eva for the amazing job you have done as Chair of IACS' Environment Panel. Under your leadership you've kept IACS at the forefront of the debate and helped us support the maritime community in pursuing their environmental objectives. You still have a very busy few months left before we wish you all the best for your next steps, both with Bureau Veritas and with IACS.

    Making shipping safer and cleaner

This post is to announce you that, yesterday, 18 September, at the close of our last IACS Environmental Panel meeting of my three-year term, I was promoted by the panel to the grade of “Captain.” ⚓ Although my term as Chair continues until the end of 2025 — with many important tasks still ahead — with an historic milestone on the horizon with MEPC ES.2 and the discussion about adoption of the NZF in the amendments of MARPOL Annex VI where IACS has contributed with two papers, MEPC ES.2/2/2 and MEPC ES.2/2/15, aiming at making the framework as practical and implementable as possible —this felt like the right moment to pause and reflect. Looking back on these almost three years: • Professionally, my learning curve on environmental regulation has skyrocketed, thanks to working closely with such the talented group of experts • Personally, it has been a true privilege to collaborate with such committed and inspiring people. I am fully confident that the incoming Chair, Maria Garbarini, MRINA will take the Environmental Panel to the next level, and I wish her the same satisfaction I have had during my term. There are still 3 months ahead but I can already say that this journey would not have been so rewarding without the consistent support of our IACS Accredited Representative at IMO, Konstantin Petrov, together with Debbie Fihosy (without forgetting Nimia Willems), and of course the constructive contributions and valuable exchanges of the panel members: George Nikolaidis , Sebastien CROUZET, Huifang WANG, Vjeko BARAC, Eirik Nyhus, ARVIND KUMAR, Kim Hoi-Jun, Mark Towl, Tomonori HIRATSUKA, Krzysztof Jacek Kołwzan, PhD , Pier Luigi Gaggero, Aslı Yaldız Öztekin and of course, Dafni Sofiadi and Jihoon Suk #IACS #EnvironmentalPanel #Sustainability #Maritime

Today, we join the International Maritime Organization(IMO) in marking World Maritime Day, under the theme: “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.” 🌊⚓ The ocean sustains global trade, livelihoods, ecosystems, and our climate. With more than 80% of world trade transported by sea, shipping has a central role to play in safeguarding this vital resource. At IACS, we remain committed to supporting the IMO’s robust regulatory framework and to working with shipyards, shipowners, regulators, and industry partners to ensure shipping continues to evolve in a way that is safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible. 👉 Learn more about IMO World Maritime Day here: https://lnkd.in/eEf28-hC #WorldMaritimeDay

Clear communication and partnership are key to tackling the complex challenges facing our industry, from decarbonisation to digitalisation and structural safety. In the latest article, IACS Secretary General Robert Ashdown and GPG Chair Dr. Ajay Asok Kumar reflect on how strategic industry dialogue continues to drive progress in safety, decarbonisation, and regulatory alignment. ✅ Joint Industry Working Groups (JIWGs): The new JIWG on Safe Decarbonisation is building shared understanding on risks and readiness of low-carbon fuels and technologies like ammonia, hydrogen, and energy storage. ✅ Stakeholder Engagement: In 2024, IACS strengthened industry dialogue through technical meetings and workshops, sharing updates on CSR revisions and safety recommendations to support transparency and collaboration. ✅ Tripartite Dialogue: A key platform for shipbuilders, owners, and class societies to explore issues like EV safety, lifecycle GHG emissions, digitalisation, and underwater radiated noise. 🔗 Read the full article below #ShipsAndShipping #MaritimeSafety #Collaboration

At IACS, we recognise that effective regulation and innovation in shipping require broad industry input, not just from classification societies, but from those who design, build, operate, and regulate vessels.   One of the ways we support this collaboration is through Joint Working Groups (JWGs), established in response to emerging technical or policy challenges. These groups bring together IACS experts with external stakeholders to develop Resolutions and Recommendations that reflect both regulatory rigour and operational insight.   In parallel, the annual Tripartite Meetings, hosted in key shipbuilding nations since 2002, have become a cornerstone of industry dialogue, bringing together shipyards, shipowners, and classification societies to align on critical issues like ship design standards, construction quality, and evolving technical demands. The next meeting will be held from 21-23 October in Busan, South Korea. As the industry continues to evolve, these collaborative efforts are essential to ensuring safety, performance, and innovation remain at the forefront of maritime development.    👉 Explore how IACS supports cross-industry collaboration: https://lnkd.in/ereTaywc   #ShipsAndShipping #Collaboration #MaritimeExcellence
