📣🌳🦡 Biodiversity is a core opportunity, not just an external risk.
What a privilege it was to convene the opening reception for the UKBBF Summit at the Houses of Parliament on 21st October 2025 and to help steer our main Summit the following day.
As a Founder and Director of the UK Business and Biodiversity Forum, I stated that our mission is clear: to bring together the essential voices of corporate leadership, finance, and government to reimagine biodiversity in business. The energy and expertise in the room, representing the House of Commons, the House of Lords, SMEs, and global corporate and financial institutions, was truly inspiring, underscoring the urgency of the conversation.
As I said at the time, we must move beyond paralysis. We need collective action and clear policy direction from government to incentivise and stabilise the nature-positive transition. The transition to a nature-positive economy is central to risk management, innovation, and value creation – and it is vital, given over half of global GDP is reliant on nature. We must move beyond the perception of biodiversity as an external risk and embrace it as a core opportunity.
The reception set the perfect tone for the following day’s Summit, with three leaders speaking: On engineering resilience we heard from Professor Denise Bower OBE Bower OBE, on integrating finance we heard from Marie Freier and on the strategic imperative, providing the government perspective, from Dr Gemma Harper OBE FAcSS, CEO of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).
The main Summit day, held at Arup , was packed with insightful discussions. Our opening keynote from Orna NiChionna (Burberry) challenged us to fundamentally rethink business purpose and resilience. We heard insights on the UK Corporate Challenge on Biodiversity expertly moderated by Jenny Merriman. On investor Perspectives: Our panel led by Gina Gambetta (Responsible Investor), explored how investors are actively driving nature-positive change. The session on the Importance of the Built Environment discussed the critical role of place-making and infrastructure in boosting biodiversity. The day concluded with a demonstration on how we can have influence in the 'chaos' of complexity. More posts will follow soon on the fantastic speakers and outcomes.
🙏 A huge thank you to all who supported or contributed to this pivotal moment for nature in the UK, including Barry Gardiner MP and Steve Kolenberg for their immense help in hosting the reception, as the International Conservation APPG and its secretariat, The ICCF Group. Thank you to our generous reception sponsors for their commitment and crucial support. Additional thanks to Arup and Tom Butterworth for providing the venue for the Summit. Thank you once again to everyone who attended.
