About us
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London is one of the largest in Europe and the largest in the UK centres for research and education in psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience. The IoPPN is renowned for its high-quality research and was the most cited research centre outside the US and the second most cited in the world, according to indicators by Thomson Reuters and SciVal. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.

First systematic review on governance guiding child and adolescent mental health research in many African countries reveals major gaps. 🔎 What was found: Major gaps in governance that risk leaving young people’s needs overlooked. 📢 What’s needed: Urgent reforms to ensure research protects, empowers, and includes children and adolescents. Dr Margaret Uddin Ojeahere, first author said "Our review found that mental health research involving children and adolescents in Africa is constrained by outdated regulations and weak ethical frameworks. This underscores the urgent need to review existing regulations and enact new ones that ensure ethically balanced mental health research in younger populations in Africa." Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa, senior author said “Africa’s young people deserve research that safeguards their rights, reflects their realities, and strengthens their futures. Our review shows that without urgent reforms in governance, too many children and adolescents remain invisible in mental health research.” https://lnkd.in/e9RA_KGR

King's researchers found that menopausal difficulties increase in line with the severity of ADHD symptoms. "This is an important first study examining menopausal experiences in ADHD, which demonstrates that the presence of ADHD may impact how women perceive and attribute their experiences during the menopause. This has implications for how women are supported during this time, both with their ADHD and the menopause." — Professor Ellie Dommett Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/e9nYCbKN #ADHDAwarenessMonth #WorldMenopauseDay
