You can add value to even the most tactical of relationships with an LSP, simply by asking the question: “What else could you do for us and what else do you do for your other customers?” This is so very often missed at the tail end of a supplier base, but we miss the opportunity to find relationships with LSPs that we could grow. More concerningly is the high number of strategic LSP contracts in which the relationship is managed in extremely restricted and tactical way. A strategic relationship needs to add value and opportunity to both the LSP and Customer, yet a rote like approach to basic performance management with perhaps an overlay of a business update from LSP and Customer simply does not cut it in the world of value creation. But most often when we initially engage with clients, this “rote like approach” is all we find. This approach stunts your ability to create value for all parties. We need to design our interactions with our LSPs to be value engines, always searching for the opportunity to improve efficiency, to optimise and to stretch the boundaries of activity. Agility beats acreage SME carriers make you a marquee customer, not line 2376 in a global spreadsheet. Decision makers are one call away, so problems resolve and decisions made in hours, not weeks.
